Happy New Year!

I am vacationing with my family and (still) deciding whether to set resolutions. ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍

You see, resolutions never stick with me beyond a month (yes, it's them, not me).‍‍‍

Having realistic, atomic-sized resolutions that celebrate small wins might help instead.

Whether you're a resolution type or not, let's resolve to be a tiny bit better—that sounds like something we can all try.

Author Lyn She-Wu lists her 2025 resolutions and reports her progress on the second day in...

Welcome to a fresh new chapter!‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍

Happy 2025 from Queenstown, New Zealand!

Lyn She-Wu:

New Year’s resolutions—what a funny tradition, right?

Every year, as the clock strikes midnight, we make big promises to ourselves, usually after a few glasses of margaritas and a lot of optimism.

I always go big with my goals: walk more than 5,000 steps a day (it’s supposed to be 10,000, but I want to achieve my goals), worry less, drink more water, get healthier, lose 5 kg, be nicer to people, create more happy moments, and enjoy life more.

It’s a full-on checklist covering everything from getting fit to keeping my mind clear, all bundled up in the idea of strength.

I will plough through it strong for 2025, making myself an Olympian and a Gold Medalist in resolution failure. Photo by Lyn She-Wu

But just like some cheesy romantic comedy, I find myself back at square one every year, with one major twist—nothing changes.

Over the past five years, I’ve made this resolution routine.

If not-sticking-to-my-plans were an Olympic sport, I’d be a gold medallist.

Goal #1: Walk More Than 5,000 Steps a Day

I start January with all the motivation in the world.

On January 1st, I throw on my snow boots, chug down an energizing cup of coffee, and head out the door like a fitness expert ready to tackle the snowy outdoors.

But reality hits fast.

It’s freezing, and even though my Apple Watch is cheering me on, I feel like I’ve just run a marathon by making it outside.

Yay! I hit all the Goals! Keep Going! Photo by Lyn She-Wu

When I finally hit 5,000 steps, I’m already munching on a big bowl of ramen.

What’s the point of walking if I drown it in carbs?

Too hungry for my goals and I NEED the JUMBO-size Ramen. Photo by Lyn She-Wu

As the week rolls on, I hit those days when my step count plummets so low that my fitness tracker might as well be on vacation.

Less than 50 steps?

Oh yeah, that happened.

Not because I’m lazy but because my health throws me for a loop, and sometimes, just getting out of bed feels like a major win.

Yet, even on my toughest days, I boast about the little steps I manage to take.

It’s not just about hitting that 5,000; it’s about showing up, no matter how small the steps.

Goal #2: Think Less

This one sounds nice, right?

Just think less and chill out more.

But my brain is like a hamster on a caffeine high, running in circles.

At first, I try to calm my thoughts and shove “enlightenment” into my head like a mantra, feeling somewhat accomplished.

But soon, I’ll be back to stressing about not meeting my step goal, the endless emails, looming deadlines, and the chaos of kids needing help with their projects every night.

I haven’t figured out how to forget to think yet, but I’ll give it another shot next year, hoping for a miracle.

Spoiler alert: it never happens.

If I can lay down and just let it snow….Photo by Lyn She-Wu

Goal #3: Drink More (Water, obviously)

“Drink more!” my resolution says, and I’m like, “Sure, I can do that.”

I fill my one-litre water bottle and sip away as if prepping for a hydration championship.

But somehow, between 300ml and 600ml, I convince myself I’ve hit my daily quota.

Why bother with more water when my coffee intake is looking sharp?

Water seems something for the truly dedicated, but I’m too busy daydreaming about my next snack or thinking about another nap.

By the weekend, my water bottle is a dusty reminder of my abandoned goals sitting on my desk.

Better luck next year.

The bubbles make the day complete! Followed by the same self-care glass of H20!

And then there’s the bubbles.

Yep, that feels justified after a day of battling resolutions.

Some days, I pour myself a glass (or two) to unwind.

After all the effort, I deserve a little indulgence, right?

And, of course, I gulp down some water afterwards because balance is key.

So, it’s a little sip of wine followed by a gulp of H2O—“self-care.”

Goal #4: Get Healthier and Lose 5 kg

This resolution is a classic—I say, “I’m going to lose 5kg every year!”

And I start with the best intentions, swapping fries for veggies and convincing my scale that this is finally the year.

But then temptation pops up in the form of a comforting bowl of ramen, and I’m like, “Another jumbo bowl can’t hurt, right?”

Before long, my 5kg target turns into a 1kg gain, and I’m left telling myself I’ll give it another shot next January.

Healthier?

Well, at least I’ve had my fill, thanks to all those carbs.

Goal #5 Speak Nicer

I genuinely look forward to this resolution each year.

I tell myself, “This year, I’ll be kinder with my words, with fewer snarky comments.”

For the first few days, I’m nailing it.

“You look awesome today!” I say to my son.

“That’s a unique viewpoint,” I tell my husband.

I gently guilt everyone with my kind words about how cool they will look in these family pictures to ring in the new year! Photo by Lyn She-Wu

But by January 2nd, my patience runs thin.

“Why does everyone leave their junk everywhere in the house?” I grumble under my breath, clearly lacking in kindness.

Me, myself, and resolutions in my cold head. Photo by Lyn She-Wu

Speaking nicer is a work in progress, but I keep it on my list in case of a lightbulb moment.

After all, it’s all about trying to set good intentions.

To anyone reading this…. I hope you have a great 2025 start like mine!

Lyn She-Wu:

Lyn She-Wu

Lyn She-Wu

yeah!

Lyn She-Wu

Lyn She-Wu

Lyn She-Wu

Lyn She-Wu

Lyn She-Wu
