I wanted to avoid the expatriate centres of Beijing and Shanghai, so that I had a chance to immerse myself in Chinese life and the Chinese language – never mind that Sichuan dialect is a notoriously distorted version of Mandarin.
In the mid-nineties, the expatriate community in Chengdu was tiny.
ex-=out of 出;patri=father land 祖国;-ate v.=to make 使… ⇒“to make someone out of his father land 使某人身处异国”→]
v. force to leave one’s country;exile把…
His brother was expatriated for some political reason.
💡 究竟怎样才算expatriate(通常简写为“expat”,常规翻译为“移居海外者”)?expat在什么情况下才会变成immigrant(常规翻译为“移民”)?
But as I filled in the boxes on the form and composed my personal declaration, I must confess that I was thinking also about sweet and spicy eggplant, of a fish lazing in chilli-bean sauce, of frilly pig’s kidneys and Sichuan pepper.

The forty or so Japanese students at the university were cliquey and exclusive.
He found the school very cliquey and elitist.
