Every year, a considerable number of Preliminary Year students face sitting resit exams in August, retaking another academic year at CELE or even dealing with termination.
It is crucial for students to realize the importance of their academic studies and acquaint themselves with progression regulations to avoid any risks in their academic progression.
每年，不少大一的同学都会因挂科而面临补考、重修甚至退学的风险。
为了帮助同学们充分认识到大一学习的重要性，我们特此解读大一的升学制度，以便大家能够规避一些不必要的升学风险。

Basic Information
升学政策基本信息
To gain a thorough understanding of the Progression Regulations, Preliminary Year students should first familiarize themselves with the following basic information：
The passing mark for all Preliminary Year (PY) assessments is 40%.
There are two types of modules in the Preliminary Year: English for Academic Purposes (EAP) modules and Content modules. EAP modules focus on developing the English language skills necessary for academic study, while Content modules cover specific subject areas related to the student's chosen field of study.
To pass an EAP module, students are required to pass all its required component assessments. For example, to pass CELEN048 RWAC module, you are required to achieve at least 40% for both components: 1) the Independent Writing Assignment (IWA) and 2) Reading to Write Exam (RW).
To pass a Content module, students are required to pass its overall module mark of 40%.
Students are required to achieve 120 credits to progress to Year 2, which means passing all studied CELE modules.
为了更好地理解大一的升学政策，同学们需要熟知以下基本信息：
CELE的各项测试及格分数线为40分（百分制）。
大一课程分为两类：一类是学术英语课程（EAP），另一类是专业基础课程（Content）。学术英语课程旨在培养学术学习所需的英语语言技能，而专业基础课程则涵盖与学生所学专业相关的学科知识。
对于EAP课程，你需要通过课程设置的所有分项测试（即每个分项测试要拿到至少40分）才算通过这门课。以第一学期的RWAC为例，RWAC包含两个测试项目，IWA论文和期末笔试。你必须在这两个项目中都至少获得40分，才算通过RWAC这门课。如果其中一项未达到40分，则视为未通过，你将无法获得该课程的20学分。
对于Content课程，你只需在完成课程设置的所有测试后，各项测试按照要求比例折算后总成绩达到40分即可。
CELE课程总学分为120。每位同学必须修满120学术学分才能升入大二。换句话说，能否升入大二完全取决于你是否能够通过所有所学的CELE课程。

What should I do
if I fail to pass a module?
如果我不小心挂科了怎么办？
If students fail to pass a module in the first attempt, they will have the opportunity to resit or resubmit the failed module(s) or assessment during the resit period in August 2025.
If, unfortunately, you fail the resit/resubmission in August 2025, additional requirements known as the "80, 40%" rule must be met to retake the failed module(s) in the 2025-26 Academic Year.
The "80, 40%" rule entails:
After the resit period, you must earn a minimum of 80 credits out of the total 120 credits for all the CELE modules you have studied.
Achieving at least a 40% weighted average mark for all studied CELE modules.
It is crucial to note that students must meet both above criteria to be eligible for the opportunity for retaking the failed module(s) in the next Academic Year.
Failure to meet academic requirements after resit/resubmission may lead to termination, with no further opportunity to complete CELE modules for progression to Year 2.
如果学生在参加完CELE课程的第一轮测试后有课程未通过，可以在2025年8月参加补考。
在八月份的补考后，仍有课程未通过，则必须满足一定的条件才有重修的机会。
这个必需条件我们称之为“80， 40%” 规则 ，具体含义如下：
在八月份补考后，你通过的CELE课程总学分必须至少达到80个学分；
所有课程的加权平均分必须至少达到40分。
请注意，只有同时满足以上两个条件，你才有机会在CELE重修一年以完成未通过的CELE课程。
如果在八月份补考后未能满足以上两个条件，你将没有重修机会而直接面临退学。
