About the talk
Context Matters
In humanities and social sciences (HSS) research, we often hear 'theory matters', 'evidence matters' and 'methodology matters'. They all matter, indeed, because they are universally valued as corecomponents not only in HSS studies but in all areas of research, and thus areused as key criteria to assess quality of research output. What we hear less is 'context matters', even though there is strong consensus that thorough analysis of context is equally, if not more, rudimentary for high-impact, meaningful research, particularly for HSS investigations. In this talk, drawing on a wide range of examples accrued in 15 years of researching multilingualism and multilingual education in China, I will illustrate why context matters for studies in that area from multiple perspective, conceptual, political, demographic, economic, sociolinguistic, historical and geographical. On that basis, I argue that the depth of understanding of the context relevant to an HSS study, empirical in particular, be made an essential criterion in assessing not only the rigor but also the validity of that investigation.
