Watch the video below to learn more about EDI!
Four core values that drive the UNNC community are Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Sustainability. EDI+S!
To create awareness regarding these principles, we have put together two programs intended to create a sustainable community through social (EDI) and environmental (+S) action.
Equity - the promotion of justice and fairness by giving everyone equal access to opportunities through the removal of barriers and disadvantages according to their needs.
Diversity - emphasises the presence of a wider community of people with different characteristics, acknowledging them by respecting and appreciating those differences.
Inclusion - is about bringing diversity into the room and valuing, respecting and celebrating each other’s voices and differences, thus building a sense of belonging for all.
While these regard social aspects of healthy human interactions, the +S part of the equation highlights environmental issues, based on the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from the 2030 Agenda.
Sustainability
Sustainability has been defined by the UN World Commission on Environment and Development as, “development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
You can see +S initiatives all over campus. From the development of a sustainable environment through our landscape and the building of sustainable structures like the Centre for Sustainable Energy Technologies, the Li Dak Sum-Yip Yio Chin-Kenneth Li Library, and the New International Conference Centre. To the development of Green strategies by our students and staff across research, teaching, and campus activities including the Sustainability Week, clubs such as NottinGreen and reUNNC, as well as working with local and global partners.
What is freecycling?
To freecycle is to give away to others what you no longer need or want, and to look for second-hand alternatives before you buy. The purpose is to reduce waste and environmental impact. Every time something is made new, even if the materials are recycled, waste and pollution occur. So sharing and re-using items, repairing and repurposing them are better than recycling at avoiding waste. And if they are given away for free - it's freecycle.
Watch out for the EDI+S label to become aware of EDI+S content in your courses and how these concern your major.
Our community, planet Earth, and the future need you. Please, join the EDI+S conversation and become part of the change that will create a better world for all.
