In addition, sociologically oriented theories could help flesh out the picture of LSP work through the examination of affect and other similar aspects of translatorial action. This article took the results of quantitative literature on revision quality as a point of departure and used a qualitative study to flesh out the findings. The fleshing out of explicatures by means of enrichments, disambiguations and reference assignments is particularly transparent in mediated communication where fleshed out target speech can be compared to underspecified source speech input. In other words, explicatures serve to “flesh out” incomplete conceptual representations encoded by utterances and thus yield fully propositional content. Various sets of localized norms flesh out the programme of the translation system in the sense described above, as criteria that allow certain communications to count as translations and others to be excluded. The work of Venuti has figured centrally in these conversations, both through the domestication vs foreignization continuum (Venuti 1995b/2008) he proposed, which fleshes out the political implications of those different methods or strategies, and through his insistence on the visibility of the translator and the necessity of translation itself, developed most recently as a critique of Apter’s polemic against world literature (Venuti 2016b). In order to flesh this out, I will discuss some mismatches between Toury’s and Chesterman’s views, and will try to show that important perspectives such as the level of abstraction, the range of coverage, and the dynamics, origins and goals of Toury’s views on these concepts throw a different light on Chesterman’s models of translation act and event.
