BANK欣然宣布亮相今年纽约军械库艺博会“聚焦”单元,展出艺术家奥利弗·赫林(Oliver Herring)于九十年代的开创性雕塑和行为表演作品,它们帮助定义了艾滋病危机年代的艺术,并将赫林推向了国际艺术舞台,曾在纽约新美术馆(The New Museum)、纽约现代艺术博物馆(MoMA)和其他著名当代艺术机构展出。

表演艺术家伊瑟尔·艾克尔伯格(Ethyl Eichelberger)是赫林的艺术偶像之一,面对他的离世,赫林开始了一场无声的抗议——编织。起初赫林用透明胶带来表达“酷儿身份的隐形性”,最后则是用银色胶布编织“一种防护盔甲”。从1991年到2001年,赫林通过编织来标记自己的时间。这些雕塑作品以精致的形式超越了性别的关联,并因其对身体、损失、缺席和庇护的表达而备受赞誉。
 
BANK 将展出奥利弗·赫林的两件里程碑式的胶带系列作品:《手的年代》(An Age for Hands1997年曾于古根海姆展出的六格拼被,以及球形的《大圆平扁》(Big Round Flat,它暗指坠毁的迪斯科球,也是赫林最后的编织作品之一。这件作品标志着在这个堕入危机的社群之中狂欢已然结束,也标志着赫林个人从孤独的编织工作过渡到合作性更强的影像媒介。

 
在“聚焦”单元中,BANK 展示1998年奥利弗·赫林的过渡期作品《影像速写1》(Video Sketch 1),这是艺术家在购买摄像机当天制作的第一部影像作品,以及其它另他广为人知的作品,这些作品追溯了赫林从编织到表演性、时基性(Time-based)作品的一生实践。作为赫林的编织作品和定格拍摄作品的补充,BANK亦展出一系列小型摄影综合媒介作品,它们在赫林早期的定格影像制作过程中发挥了重要作用。此次展出也标志着该系列绘画作品的首次面世。

For the ARMORY’s Focus section, BANK presents Oliver Herring’s seminal sculptural and performative works from the nineties that helped define art in the era of AIDS and launched Herring onto the international art circuit with presentations at The New Museum, MoMA, and other prominent institutions of contemporary art. 


In response to losing one of his artistic heroes, the performer Ethyl Eichelberger, Herring began a silent protest through the laborious act of knitting, at first with transparent tape to express “the invisibility of being queer,” and eventually in silver mylar, “as a protective armor.” From 1991-2001, Herring knitted to mark his way through time. These sculptural works transcended gender associations in exquisite forms and gained critical acclaim through their expression of the body, loss, absence, and refuge. 


BANK presents two monumental mylar pieces: “An Age for Hands,” a six-panel quilt that was exhibited at the Guggenheim in 1997, and “Big Round Flat” a spherical work that alludes to a crashed disco ball and was one of the last knitted pieces Herring produced. This work signified that the party was over for a community embattled in crisis and punctuated Herring's personal transition away from the solitary task of knitting to a more collaborative medium, video.

In Focus, BANK also presents the transitional work “Video Sketch 1” 1998, the artist’s first-ever video made on the day of buying a video camera, along with other works that trace his sensibilities from knitting to what would become a lifelong practice of performative, time-based works for which he is widely celebrated. To complement and link the knit work and stop-motion video, BANK also presents examples from a series of small photographic mixed-media works, that played a role in the process of making Herring’s early stop-motion videos. These drawings have never exhibited before.

在军械库艺博会同期,BANK画廊还将在纽约包厘街302号(302 Bowery)呈现首次Pop-up展览项目 “Herring as Nureyev as Nijinsky as Faun”


这个场外项目通过赫林最新的舞蹈表演和绘画作品,探索身体、空间、心灵和性别的界限。表演之后还将开展主持讨论,古根海姆博物馆高级策展人Vivian Greene等文化界人士一同参与。活动需提前预约。


In conjunction with the ARMORY presentation, BANK presents its first NYC pop-up! Herring as Nureyev as Nijinsky as Faun, at 302 Bowery Street. 


This ARMORY Off-Site project explores the boundaries between body, space, mind, and sex through Herring's latest choreographed performance and drawings. Moderated discussions with cultural figures such as Vivian Greene, the senior curator at the Guggenheim Museum, will follow the performances. Please check the schedule and RSVP for the performance.
