BANK is pleased to announce that Lu Yang's DOKU-The Self is featured in the group exhibition “目 China: A new generation of artists” at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Running from October 9 to February 3, 2025, This collective exhibition shines a spotlight on the upcoming contemporary Chinese art scene with works by 21 artists. The opening of China to the world, environmental upheavals and the transformation of lifestyles in Chinese society are all topics that have been addressed in the contemporary creative output by this young generation of artists, born in the late 1970s through to the early 1990s, as China experienced a great economic boom.
This group exhibition is under the partnership between the Pompidou Centre and the West Bund Museum in Shanghai. Under the theme of the character 目 (mù), meaning “eye”, the rich selection of works picked out by the Sino-French curators covers a broad spectrum of practices — video, painting, sculpture, installations, photography and new media — with emphasis on creations in recent years. Core issues explored in the works of many of these artists include Chinese interaction with the rest of the world, thoughts about globalisation and global challenges, especially environmental breakdown.

Lu Yang’s elaborately outfitted and eerily lifelike avatars in work series DOKU are born out of the artist’s distinct and ongoing scientific and philosophical inquiries — an interdisciplinary blend of Buddhism, neuroscience, psychology and modern technology. The shape-shifting protagonist in this five-channel work is DOKU; the name is derived from the phrase “Dokusho Dokushi,” which translates to “We are born alone, and we die alone,” and references a canonical Buddhist scripture. While sharing Lu Yang’s facial expressions and features, the nonbinary character was generated from an amalgamation of various dancers and musicians, and created in collaboration with a team of scientists, 3D animators, and digital technicians using the latest in motion capture technology. Through this repeated incarnation, the artist is reborn as an ever-present avatar, endowed with talents surpassing physical limitations — uniting ancient concepts such as reincarnation with the latest technological innovations.
