On November 19, an oil painting by Belgian artist René Magritte has sold at Christie's auction house for $121.2 million (114.2 million euros). That is the highest amount ever paid for a work by the surrealist artist.
At issue is a version of L'empire des lumières, which Magritte painted in 1954.

The work measures 146 by 114 centimetres and depicts a suburban street scene, with a house illuminated by a lamppost. In the painting, it appears to be both night and day.

Magritte is only the 16th artist whose work has been sold for more than $100 million. Leonardo da Vinci, Gustav Klimt, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Pablo Picasso are also among that list.
