Wendy Saunders, born and raised in Bruges, Belgium, comes from a lineage of craftsmen. After obtaining her master's degree in architecture from Ghent University, she spent a decade in leading design firms in Amsterdam before relocating to China in 2005.

In Shanghai, Wendy co-founded AIM ARCHITECTURE with her partner, Vincent de Graaf, focusing on designing spaces that encourage social change and enhance human connections. Moving away from traditional architectural practices, she created a studio that attracts a diverse group of talented designers who share her vision of improving urban environments for a better future.

Wendy draws inspiration from the rich street life in China, everyday craftsmanship, and sensory experiences, such as the feel of materials. This eclectic influence shapes her design philosophy, marked by boldness, directness, and a touch of humour.

Located just an hour south of Chengdu, The Spine Resort aims to be a notable destination that highlights views of the nearby lakes while providing guests with a meaningful and engaging experience. Inspired by the nearby Linpan villages, known for their harmonious relationship between buildings and nature, the resort features organic walkways that connect guest rooms with lush gardens, promoting a sense of tranquillity and connection.

The main lobby is designed to emerge seamlessly from these walkways, creating a welcoming heart for the resort. Its wooden roof structure echoes traditional architecture and sustainability principles, forming a warm, rhythmic spine that guides visitors through the space. The pathways shield guests from the elements and open up to beautiful courtyard gardens, creating a unique architectural experience that balances nature, architecture, and human interaction.
