Understanding the characteristics of the colors she uses and how they relate to the form of the subject is essential to fully appreciate her artistic intent. In Kim’s paintings, frequently appear not in isolation, but in pairs or groups, reflecting her deep focus on human relationships, especially her relationships with beloved ones. These figures, whether dancers in motion or ordinary individuals, explore the dynamics of connection and isolation. A striking feature of her work is the ambiguous communication among her figures, leaving viewers uncertain whether the depicted individuals are overcoming isolation or highlighting it as they confront the audience directly.

This exploration is enriched by her use of monochromatic tones like blue, red, and green, as well as bold complementary colors, creating a visual tension that can feel both grotesque and spiritually resonant. Colors, lines and shapes in her work, are essential formal elements that direct to a spiritual atmosphere, allowing her art to achieve a cathartic expression of the inner self.

Honed through a solid mastery of drawing techniques, Kim''s approach involves a deliberate deconstruction of the human form and unique abstract realism style. This intentional stylistic choice reveals her understanding on stark truths about human nature, eschewing conventional beauty for a raw, representational perspective. Through her art, Kim confronts contemporary human realities with compassion and clarity, capturing the essence of today's societal intimacy issues. Her subjects, either men or women, coexist within her canvases, symbolizing the complex interplay of emotions and transforming life struggles into poignant anthropomorphic narratives.

Kim’s paintings not only capture emotional landscapes but also embody a proactive approach to artistic expression—a spiritual and empathetic communication that engages viewers on a deeply personal level. This active engagement implies her ability to evoke strong impressions that resonate beyond mere representation, fostering a dialogue that transcends the canvas into the realm of shared human experience. Through her unique blend of form, color, and subject matter, Kim Young-mi invites us to explore the depths of our own emotions and relationships in a visually arresting and emotionally resonant manner.
