ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

"Entertainment" has become a distinctive feature of our era, permeating various fields such as politics, religion, news, sports, education, and business. This trend towards entertainment has led people to increasingly indulge in brief, stimulating sensory pleasures, resulting in a neglect of deep thinking about social life.

On May 11, 2024, the "Play For Fun" solo exhibition by Gong Xinru opened in Hall A of the Shanghai 3723 Art Museum. The exhibition is hosted by the 3723 Art Museum, with Huang Yi as the curator. Artist Gong Xinru presents 19 new works primarily using plexiglass as the creative medium. The exhibition opened to the public on May 12, 2024, and will continue until June 23, 2024.

In Gong Xinru's works, symbolic elements are omnipresent. Traffic signs, human outlines, and distorted arrows are stylized, flattened images. While these may appear as ordinary symbols, they acquire new life and meaning in Gong Xinru's works. These symbols are not only symbolic, such as traffic signs representing "rules," human faces representing "the public," and twisted arrows representing "inner turmoil," but they are also tools used by Gong Xinru to critique and reflect on society.

In the artist's view, acrylic itself is a symbol. Its smooth and glossy surface, along with its garish colors, make acrylic an ideal medium for Gong Xinru to express his artistic concepts. The garishness of acrylic serves as a metaphor for the plethora of entertainment and sensory stimulation products inundating today's society, such as the internet, television, and video games, which satisfy the public's basic needs but also gradually turn people into dependents of entertainment. Additionally, the fragility of acrylic further suggests that under the influence of an entertainment-dominated culture, people are increasingly losing their self-control and rational thinking abilities.
