夏，四月，楚围汉王于荥阳，急；汉王请和，割荥阳以西者为汉。In summer, the fourth month, the Chu army besieged the King of Han in Yingyang, and the situation was urgent. The King of Han requested peace, offering to cede the area west of Yingyang to the Han.
亚父劝羽急攻荥阳；汉王患之。Fan Zeng (Yafu) advised Xiang Yu to attack Yingyang urgently. The King of Han was worried about this.
项羽使使至汉，陈平使为太牢具。Xiang Yu sent an envoy to the Han. Chen Ping prepared a sumptuous feast for the envoy.
注： “太牢具” 指的是古代帝王、诸侯祭祀社稷时，牛、羊、豕三牲全备为 “太牢”，在招待宾客时准备这样规格的酒食，是非常隆重、丰盛的招待规格。
举进，见楚使，即佯惊曰：“吾以为亚父使，乃项王使！”复持去，更以恶草具进楚使。When the feast was presented and he saw the Chu envoy, he pretended to be surprised and said, "I thought it was an envoy from Fan Zeng (Yafu), but it turns out to be an envoy from King Xiang!" Then he took the feast away and replaced it with a simple and crude meal for the Chu envoy.
楚使归，具以报项王，项王果大疑亚父。亚父欲急攻下荥阳城，项王不信，不肯听。When the Chu envoy returned, he reported everything to King Xiang. Sure enough, King Xiang became greatly suspicious of Fan Zeng (Yafu). Fan Zeng (Yafu) wanted to capture Yingyang quickly, but King Xiang didn't believe him and refused to listen.
亚父闻项王疑之，乃怒曰：“天下事大定矣，君王自为之，愿请骸骨！”归，未至彭城，疽发背而死。When Fan Zeng (Yafu) heard that King Xiang was suspicious of him, he became angry and said, "The great matter of the world is almost settled. Your Majesty can handle it yourself. I would like to ask for permission to retire!" On his way back, before reaching Pengcheng, he died of a carbuncle on his back.
五月，将军纪信言于汉王曰：“事急矣！臣请诳楚，王可以间出。”In May, General Ji Xin said to the King of Han, "The situation is urgent! Please allow me to deceive the Chu army so that Your Majesty can escape secretly."
于是陈平夜出女子东门二千馀人，楚因而四面击之。So Chen Ping sent more than two thousand women out of the east gate at night. The Chu army attacked them from all sides.
纪信乃乘王车，黄屋左纛，曰：“食尽，汉王降楚。”楚皆呼万岁，之城东观。Ji Xin then rode in the king's carriage, with a yellow awning and a flag on the left side, and said, "We have run out of food. The King of Han is surrendering to the Chu." The Chu soldiers all cheered "Long live!" and went to the east of the city to watch.
以故汉王得与数十骑出西门遁去，令韩王信与周苛、魏豹、枞公守荥阳。Because of this, the King of Han was able to escape with dozens of horsemen through the west gate, and ordered Han Wang Xin, Zhou Ke, Wei Bao, and Cong Gong to defend Yingyang.
羽见纪信，问：“汉王安在？”曰：“已出去矣。”羽烧杀信。When Xiang Yu saw Ji Xin, he asked, "Where is the King of Han?" Ji Xin said, "He has already left." Xiang Yu burned Ji Xin to death.
周苛、枞公相谓曰：“反国之王，难与守城！”因杀魏豹。Zhou Ke and Cong Gong said to each other, "A king who has rebelled is difficult to defend the city with!" So they killed Wei Bao.
