辕生说汉王曰：“汉与楚相距荥阳数岁，汉常困。愿君王出武关，项王必引兵南走。Yuan Sheng advised the King of Han, saying, "The Han and Chu have been confronting each other in Yingyang for several years, and the Han has often been in a difficult situation. I hope Your Majesty will march out through Wuguan. Then King Xiang will surely lead his troops to go south.
王深壁勿战，令荥阳、成皋间且得休息，使韩信等得安辑河北赵地，连燕、齐，君王乃复走荥阳。Your Majesty should fortify your position deeply and refrain from fighting, allowing the area between Yingyang and Chenggao to have a rest. Meanwhile, let Han Xin and others pacify the Zhao region north of the Yellow River and form alliances with Yan and Qi. Then Your Majesty can march back to Yingyang again.
如此，则楚所备者多，力分；汉得休息，复与之战，破之必矣！”If this is done, the Chu will have to prepare against many fronts, and their forces will be divided. The Han will have a rest and then fight against them again. It is certain that we will defeat them!"
汉王之败彭城，解而西也，彭越皆亡其所下城，独将其兵北居河上，常往来为汉游兵击楚，绝其后粮。When the King of Han was defeated in Pengcheng and retreated westward, Peng Yue abandoned all the cities he had captured. He alone led his troops to the north of the Yellow River and often roamed around as Han's mobile troops to attack the Chu, cutting off their rear supplies.
是月，彭越渡睢，与项声、薛公战下邳，破，杀薛公。In this month, Peng Yue crossed the Sui River and fought with Xiang Sheng and Xue Gong in Xiapi. He won the battle, killing Xue Gong.
羽乃使终公守成皋，而自东击彭越。汉王引兵北，击破终公，复军成皋。Xiang Yu then ordered Zhong Gong to defend Chenggao and himself went east to attack Peng Yue. The King of Han led his troops to the north, defeated Zhong Gong, and reoccupied Chenggao.
六月，羽已破走彭越，闻汉复军成皋，乃引兵西拔荥阳城，生得周苛。In June, after Xiang Yu had defeated and driven away Peng Yue, when he heard that the King of Han had reoccupied Chenggao, he led his troops westward to capture Yingyang City and captured Zhou Ke alive.
羽谓苛：“为我将，以公为上将军，封三万户。”Xiang Yu said to Zhou Ke, "Serve as my general. I will appoint you as the Grand General and enfeoff you with thirty thousand households."
周苛骂曰：“若不趋降汉，今为虏矣；若非汉王敌也！”羽烹周苛，并杀枞公而虏韩王信，遂围成皋。Zhou Ke cursed, saying, "If you hadn't quickly surrendered to the Han, you would be a captive now. You are no match for the King of Han!" Xiang Yu then boiled Zhou Ke alive, killed Cong Gong as well, and captured Xin, the King of Han. Then he laid siege to Chenggao.
汉王逃，独与滕公共车出成皋玉门，北渡河，宿小脩武传舍。晨，自称汉使，驰入赵壁。The King of Han escaped. Alone with Teng Gong, he rode in a carriage out of the Yumen Gate of Chenggao, crossed the Yellow River to the north, and stayed in a hostel in Xiaoxiuwu. In the morning, claiming to be a Han envoy, he galloped into the camp of Zhao.
张耳、韩信未起，即其卧内，夺其印符以麾召诸将，易置之。信、耳起，乃知汉王来，大惊。Zhang Er and Han Xin were still in bed. He entered their bedrooms, snatched their seals and tally-commands, and summoned the generals with them, rearranging their positions. When Han Xin and Zhang Er got up, they were greatly surprised to find that the King of Han had come.
汉王既夺两人军，即令张耳徇行，备守赵地。拜韩信为相国，收赵兵未发者击齐。After the King of Han had seized the troops of the two men, he immediately ordered Zhang Er to patrol and defend the Zhao region. He appointed Han Xin as the Prime Minister and gathered the remaining Zhao troops that had not been dispatched to attack Qi.
诸将稍稍得出成皋从汉王。楚拔成皋，欲西；汉使兵距之巩，令其不得西。Gradually, the various generals were able to escape from Chenggao and follow the King of Han. When the Chu captured Chenggao and wanted to march westward, the Han sent troops to resist them at Gong, preventing them from going west.
秋，七月，有星孛于大角。In autumn, July, a comet appeared near the Arcturus.
临江王龙薨，子尉嗣。Long, the King of Linjiang, died, and his son Wei succeeded him.
汉王得韩信军，复大振。八月，引兵临河，南乡，军小脩武，欲复与楚战。After the King of Han obtained Han Xin's troops, his strength was greatly revived. In August, he led his troops to the bank of the Yellow River, facing south, and stationed his troops in Xiaoxiuwu, intending to fight against the Chu again.
郎中郑忠说止汉王，使高垒深堑勿与战。Zheng Zhong, a court attendant, advised the King of Han to stop and build high ramparts and deep trenches and refrain from fighting.
汉王听其计，使将军刘贾、卢绾将卒二万人，骑数百，度白马津，入楚地，佐彭越，烧楚积聚，以破其业，无以给项王军食而已。The King of Han followed his plan. He sent General Liu Jia and Lu Wan to lead twenty thousand soldiers and several hundred cavalrymen to cross the Baima Ford and enter the Chu territory to assist Peng Yue. They burned the Chu's supplies and stores to disrupt their undertakings, simply to cut off the food supply for King Xiang's army.
楚兵击刘贾，贾辄坚壁不肯与战，而与彭越相保。When the Chu soldiers attacked Liu Jia, Liu Jia always fortified his position firmly and refused to fight, but stayed with Peng Yue to protect each other.
彭越攻徇梁地，下睢阳、外黄等十七城。Peng Yue attacked and occupied the Liang region, capturing seventeen cities including Suiyang and Waihuang.
九月，项王谓大司马曹咎曰：“谨守成皋。即汉王欲挑战，慎勿与战，勿令得东而已。我十五日必定梁地，复从将军。”In September, King Xiang said to Cao Jiu, the Grand Marshal, "Guard Chenggao carefully. Even if the King of Han wants to challenge you, be careful not to fight, just don't let him go east. I will surely pacify the Liang region within fifteen days and then return to you."
羽引兵东行，击陈留、外黄、睢阳等城，皆下之。Xiang Yu led his troops eastward to attack cities such as Chenliu, Waihuang, and Suiyang, and captured them all.
