The Qwine Expo, currently taking place in Qingtian, Lishui, Zhejiang, is an international event dedicated to the development of the global wine industry. It serves as a vital platform for showcasing and promoting wines from around the world. Among the numerous activities held this year, two wine masterclasses stood out as highlights.
These masterclasses delved into the wine culture and traditions of Italy and South Africa—two wine-producing countries gaining increasing attention in the Chinese market. The sessions were respectively hosted by Sabina Yang and Angela Yang . They not only offered participants an opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge and appreciation of fine wines but also provided an insider's perspective on wine culture education. Moreover, the masterclasses created a valuable space for direct communication and collaboration with producers, enhancing both cultural exchange and business opportunities.
Sabina Yang
Sabina Yang led participants on a sensory adventure, exploring Italy's seven major wine regions and tasting up to ten distinct wines.
From the fresh white wines of northern Italy to the elegant and intense reds of Tuscany and the south, each wine highlighted the diversity and richness of Italy's terroir. During the masterclass, Sabina emphasized the diversity and openness of the Chinese market, which offers ample opportunities for a variety of wine styles. She remarked, “China’s market is vast, and every wine can find its audience.” She also pointed out that regional preferences, from the Yangtze River Delta to the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area, are driving the growing demand for diverse wines.
This masterclass, organized in collaboration with Wine Channel, not only provided a chance to taste Italy’s finest wines but also served as a significant learning platform for Chinese wine professionals and enthusiasts. As Italian wines continue to gain market share, exploring the richness and uniqueness of Italy’s wine regions is becoming an invaluable resource for Chinese consumers and importers.
Angela Yang focused her masterclass on South African wines, particularly the exceptional offerings from the renowned Springfield Estate. While South African wines entered the Chinese market later than those from other countries, their diverse selection and strong emphasis on sustainable production have quickly made them popular in the wine industry.
Angela explained that South African wines are steadily gaining recognition in China, driven by growing demand for white wines—especially Chenin Blanc—and the country's signature red wine, Pinotage. She remarked, “South African wines are entering the Chinese market with immense potential,” reflecting Chinese consumers’ curiosity and openness to new flavors. The diversity of wine styles and a strong commitment to environmental sustainability have been key factors in South African wine's success in such a vast and varied market.
In addition, Angela Yang hosted another masterclass featuring award-winning wines from the 2024 Qwine Expo TOP 100 global wine. This selection included top-tier wines from classic European wine countries to innovative New World wine regions. The event showcased how the Qwine Expo not only promotes wines but also supports the continued growth of the Chinese wine market through the presentation of diverse flavors and styles.
ONAV Master Wine Taster Wang Lu emphasized the significance of masterclasses as a vital tool for wine education. These sessions not only deepen consumers' and importers' understanding of products but also serve as a direct bridge between producers and their clients. Lu remarked, “Participants in masterclasses often go on to become importers or ambassadors for wineries.” She believes that such opportunities for learning and interaction are essential for the growth of the Chinese wine market.
Wine education within the exhibition plays a key role in fostering a more distinctive wine culture—one capable of meeting the challenges of a rapidly evolving market like China. Both masterclasses and tasting events such as the TOP 100 global wine contribute to this goal by enhancing consumers’ understanding of the characteristics and potential of wines from around the world, underscoring their educational value.
The Qwine Expo in Qingtian highlights how education and exploration are essential to the success of international wines, particularly in China’s rapidly diversifying market. Masterclasses focusing on wines from different countries not only offer a unique opportunity to delve deeper into the traditions behind these wines but also strengthen the connection between producers and consumers.
As consumer interest in sustainability and diversity continues to grow, the future of the Chinese wine market is brimming with opportunities. Events like the Qwine Expo will remain pivotal in expanding the market and enhancing the value of global wines, solidifying their role in the industry's ongoing evolution.
