The Sixth Patriarch's Dharma Jewel Platform Sutra
般若品第二
善知識，
Good and Wise Friends,
智慧觀照，
when you contemplate and
illuminate with a wisdom
內外明徹，
that clearly penetrates
both inside and outside,
識自本心。
you can discern your original mind.
若識本心，即本解脫。
Recognizing your original mind
is the fundamental liberation.
若得解脫，即是般若三昧，
And this liberation is
itself the Prajna Samadhi;
即是無念。
this is no-thought.
何名無念？
What is no-thought?
若見一切法染著，
If you can view all dharmas
with an unattached mind,
是為無念。
this is no-thought.
用即遍一切處，
The mind is everywhere engaged
亦不著一切處。
but is nowhere attached.
但淨本心，
Just purify your original mind
使六識出六門，
so that the six consciousnesses
go out the six [sensory] "gates,"
於六塵中無染無雜，
yet remain undefiled and do not
intermix with the six "dusts"
[sensory objects],
來去自由，
coming and going freely,
通用無滯，
penetrating without obstruction.
即是般若三昧，
This is the Prajna Samadhi,
自在解脫，
freedom and liberation.
名無念行。
This is the practice of no-thought.
若百物不思，
If you do not think of anything at all
當令念絕，
in order to repress and eradicate thought,
即是法縛，
this is called "Dharma-bondage."
即名邊見。
It is an extremist view.
善知識，
Good and Wise Friends,
悟無念法者，萬法盡通。
one who realizes the Dharma
of no-thought thoroughly
comprehends the myriad things.
悟無念法者，見諸佛境界。
One who realizes the
Dharma of no-thought sees
the realms of the Buddhas.
悟無念法者，至佛地位。
One who realizes the
Dharma of no-thought reaches
the stage of Buddhahood.
善知識，
Good and Wise Friends,
後代得吾法者，
later generations who encounter my Dharma
將此頓教法門，
should take up this Direct Teaching,
於同見同行，
and together with those of like minds
發願受持。
and like practice vow to maintain it
如事佛故，
as if they were attending on the Buddha.
終身而不退者，
To the end of their lives if they do not retreat,
定入聖位。
they will definitely join the ranks of sages.
然須傳授，從上以來默傳分付，
Pass it along in this way
from generation to generation;
impart it carefully and with discretion.
不得匿其正法。
Don't conceal the genuine teaching,
若不同見同行，在別法中，不得傳付。
yet do not transmit it to those
whose attitudes and practices
hold to other teachings,
損彼前人，究竟無益。
since it could be harmful,
and ultimately of no benefit.
恐愚人不解，謗此法門，
I fear that deluded people may
misunderstand and revile this teaching,
百劫千生，斷佛種性。
and in doing so cripple their
inherent potential for Buddhahood
for thousands of lifetimes.
