  般 若 第 二

   CHAPTER TWO Prajna




善知識,

Good and Wise Friends,

何名般若?

what is prajna?

般若者,唐言智慧也。

In our language, 

praina means wisdom.

一切處所,一切時中,

In every place and in every moment,

念念不愚,

in thought after thought,

never becoming muddled

常行智慧,

and constantly acting wisely

即是般若行。

—just this is practicing prajna.


 


一念愚即般若絕,

With one deluded thought,

prajna is cut off.

一念智即般若生。

With one wise thought,

prajna springs to life.

世人愚迷,

Ordinary people, 

muddled and confused,

不見般若,

fail to recognize prajna.

口說般若,

Their mouths talk about prajna,

心中常愚,

but their minds remain confused.

常自言我修般若,

They are forever saying,

"I cultivate prajna!,"

念念說空,

and though they talk on

and on about emptiness,

不識真空。

they have no idea

of its true meaning.

般若無形相,

Prajna has no shape or form;

智慧心即是。

it is only the mind of wisdom.

若作如是解,

If you understand it in this way,

即名般若智。

just this is prajna wisdom.


 


何名波羅蜜?

What does paramita mean?

此是西國語,

This is a Sanskrit word;

唐言到彼岸,

in Chinese it means

 "arriving at the other shore."

解義離生滅。

It means that one is no longer

bound by birth and death.

著境生滅起,

If one clings to the sensory realm,

birth and death arise,

如水有波浪,

like waves arise on water—

即名為此岸。

this is called "this shore."

離境無生滅,

If you do not cling to

sensory states,there 

is no birth and death,

如水常通流,

just like freely flowing water—

即名為彼岸,

this is what is meant by

 "the other shore."

故號波羅蜜。

So, it is called paramita.


 

  

善知識,

Good and Wise Friends,

迷人口念,

confused people recite 

with their mouths,

當念之時,

yet right while they recite,

有妄有非。

they live in falsity and error.

念念若行,

To cultivate in every moment 

of thought

是名真性。

that is the true nature.

悟此法者,

Understand this Dharma,

是般若法。

it is prajna Dharma.


 


修此行者,

And cultivate this practice;

是般若行。

this is living the life 

of prajna.

不修即凡。

If you fail to cultivate in this way, you will just be an ordinary person.

一念修行,

But the moment you put 

it into practice,

自身等佛。

you yourself are equal 

to the Buddhas.







 

    願以此功德, 普及於一切,

  我等與眾生,皆共成佛道。
