We are thrilled to unveil the keynote speakers and the program for the upcoming Cumulus Regional Seminar: "Design for Intercultural Innovation" hosted by the Department of Industrial Design in collaboration with the School of Cultural Technologies.

Join us on the 28-29 November 2024 as we gather thought leaders and innovators from Cumulus China network and design leaders from the Netherlands to debate about our collective responsibility to maintain an intercultural dialogue about the role of creatives in fostering change in our world.

In the coming weeks, we will be sharing bits of our program, and we start with the first pair of keynotes:

Immersive Design Legacies: Intelligent Design Innovation 

Abstract

"Immersive Design Legacies" addresses the critical role of design intelligence and innovation in shaping the industries and societies of tomorrow. This keynote explores how immersive technologies

transform creative industries and essential sectors like urban development and manufacturing. By highlighting case studies in intelligent design and industrial applications, it presents practical insights into creating adaptable, resilient environments that respond to the evolving needs of global communities. Through AI-driven design, blockchain for asset authentication, and data-rich urban simulations, this talk will explore how digital instruments foster creative resilience, authenticity, and broadened access to design. A future-focused perspective is painted on harnessing design intelligence across borders, generating meaningful, interactive spaces that reflect local culture and global innovation.

Bio

Professor Marc Aurel Schnabel is a leading figure in digital design, digital heritage, and extended reality, with over 30 years of impactful work in architecture and design research. As Dean at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University’s Design School, he advances Syntegrative Education, fostering innovation through interdisciplinary approaches. He was the Founding Director of FORUM8 Research Labs in Tokyo and Suzhou, which pioneers virtual city simulations and digital twins. Professor Schnabel has led multiple professional organizations, been part of the EU's "RE-designing Access to Cultural Heritage" platform, curated digital design exhibitions and developed networks linking global experts in digital design innovation.

Bio

Ingeborg de Roode (1962) has been the industrial design curator at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam since 2001. She organized many exhibitions such as Marcel Wanders. Pinned Up (2014), Living in the Amsterdam School. Designs for the Interior 1910-1930 (2016), Solution or Utopia? Design for Refugees (2017), Studio Drift. Coded Nature (2018, together with Pao Lien Djie), and It’s Our F***ing Backyard. Designing Material Futures (2022, together with Amanda Pinatih).
