Balancing Academics and Curricular Activities

In today’s society, students face mounting academic pressure while the value of extracurricular activities is increasingly recognized. Striking a balance between rigorous schoolwork and enriching extracurricular pursuits has become a priority for many students and parents. On September 28th, our school hosted its first Parents' Workshop of the semester, drawing participation from numerous parents within the IB program.

The workshop, themed “How to Achieve Both Academic and Extracurricular Success,” aimed to equip parents with the knowledge and tools to foster their children’s comprehensive development. The event featured experts of the school and exemplary student representatives who shared effective strategies for balancing academics with extracurricular involvement.

✴ Wisdom Sharing by the Principals

The workshop commenced with an inspiring opening speech from the principals, who highlighted the school’s educational philosophy and expectations for students. The International Baccalaureate (IB) offers a holistic education. The action components—Primary Years Programme (PYP)-Action, Middle Year Programme (MYP) - Service as Action, and the Diploma Programme (DP) -Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)—emphasizes not only academic excellence but also personal and social development through various extension programs and activities.

Our school's key features include Extension Programs,Sports Activities,House Events,Round Square Activities,Duke of Edinburgh's Award Programme.

Next, we heard from six outstanding students representing the primary, middle, and high school levels. They shared their experiences of how they maintained their enthusiasm for extracurricular activities while managing the pressures of intense academic workloads and achieving excellent results.

Insights from Straight-A Students

From the primary level, Bruce Lu and Amy Chen shared their experiences participating in the World Scholar's Cup, Novelty, Originality,Creativity (NOC), the Math Kangaroo competition, and other extra-curricular activities to balance their studies and personal lives.

Not only have they developed various learning skills required by the IB framework, but they have also gained valuable experiences that enrich their educational journey.

In middle years, Charles Wang and Dora Dong shared their colorful extracurricular lives and the various competitions they participated in. They mentioned that in addition to their studies, they actively engaged in school-organized science and technology competitions, artistic performances, and sports activities. These experiences not only enriched their extracurricular lives but also cultivated their teamwork skills and innovative thinking. Wang specifically noted that participating in business competitions and math contests helped him develop logical thinking, while Dong enhanced her expression skills and self-confidence by participating in the World Scholar's Cup and business competitions.

Subsequently, Harmoni Lai and Roki Lin from DP introduced the importance of CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) in the IB curriculum. They shared their experiences in internships, as well as specific examples from their CAS activities. Lai mentioned that she participated in a community service project, while Lin explored various mediums in her artistic creations, enhancing her creativity. They emphasized that CAS not only helped them learn time management and balance in their lives but also had a positive impact on their DP studies, allowing them to achieve better results in both academic and personal development.

To help parents better understand how to achieve a balance between their children's studies and extracurricular activities, we have summarized several strategies to support their overall development.

🕛Effective Time Management

Organizing time wisely is crucial. Students should create a balanced schedule that allocates sufficient time for both studies and extracurricular activities, ensuring that academic tasks are completed without sacrificing leisure and enjoyment. Good study habits and self-discipline are essential to avoid procrastination.

👦👧 Prioritizing Learning Efficiency

Quality over quantity is vital. Pursuing efficient study methods, such as the Pomodoro Technique.

🏃 Choosing the Right Extracurricular Activities

Students should identify their interests and strengths before committing to extracurricular activities. Engaging in areas they are passionate about— science, sports, music, or art.

👌Open Communication

Strong communication channels between parents, students, and schools are essential. Parents should encourage diverse involvement while staying attuned to their children’s academic progress. Schools must provide quality educational and extracurricular resources, nurturing a supportive environment. Regular discussions about challenges and feelings can deepen parent-child relationships and facilitate timely adjustments to their commitments.

💥Celebrating Achievements

Positive reinforcement enhances motivation and builds confidence, preparing children to face future challenges.

Achieving a balance between academic responsibilities and extracurricular activities can be daunting. However, with clear goals, thoughtful planning, active engagement, and strong support from both home and school, students can attain holistic development.

The workshop concluded with an interactive exchange session, where parents posed questions and engaged in discussions with the principal and experts to explore solutions to common concerns.

In closing, the principal reiterated the significance of balanced development and expressed gratitude for the parents' enthusiastic participation, emphasizing that fostering a well-rounded educational experience is a shared responsibility that lays a solid foundation for student’s future endeavors.
