Introduction
The relationship between the individual and the community has long held a prominent position in political philosophy and ethics. Both Hegel and Marx considered addressing this issue a central task. They drew upon the social realities of their era to develop and refine the theory of civil society, aiming to transcend the dichotomy between the individual and the state. Examining this theory not only aids in theoretically elucidating the evolution of thought and problem awareness from German classical philosophy to contemporary political philosophy but also facilitates a practical reevaluation of modernity, encompassing debates between the ancient and the modern, as well as distinctions between the East and the West. Consequently, this offers a potential solution for establishing a novel relationship between the individual and the community, particularly in the foundation of the Eastern world in our time.
In light of this opportunity, the Center for Marx-Engels Literature Research and the Department of Philosophy of Tsinghua University plan to host a conference on the theme ‘Civil Society and Modern State’ which features Hegel and Marx’s Theory of Civil Society. This is the 7th China-Japan Forum of Philosophy following the 6th Forum held last year at Komazawa University in Tokyo, Japan.
