Today we are launching a campaign called “HeForShe。”

I am reaching out to you because I need your help. Wewant to end gender inequality—and to do that we need everyone to be involved。

This is the first campaign of its kind at the UN: wewant to try and galvanize as many men and boys as possible to be advocates forgender equality. And we don’t just want to talk about it, but make sure it istangible。

I was appointed six months ago and the more I havespoken about feminism the more I have realized that fighting for women’s rightshas too often become synonymous with man-hating. If there is one thing I knowfor certain, it is that this has to stop。

For the record, feminism by definition is: “The beliefthat men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theoryof the political, economic and social equality of the sexes。”

I started questioning gender-based assumptions when ateight I was confused at being called “bossy,” because I wanted to direct theplays we would put on for our parents—but the boys were not。

When at 14 I started being sexualized by certainelements of the press。

I decided I was a feminist and this seemeduncomplicated to me. But my recent research has shown me that feminism hasbecome an unpopular word。

Apparently I am among the ranks of women whoseexpressions are seen as too strong, too aggressive, isolating, anti-men and,unattractive。

Why is the word such an uncomfortable one?

I am from Britain and think it is right that as awoman I am paid the same as my male counterparts. I think it is right that Ishould be able to make decisions about my own body. I think it is right thatwomen be involved on my behalf in the policies and decision-making of mycountry. I think it is right that socially I am afforded the same respect asmen. But sadly I can say that there is no one country in the world where allwomen can expect to receive these rights。

No country in the world can yet say they have achievedgender equality。

These rights I consider to be human rights but I amone of the lucky ones. My life is a sheer privilege because my parents didn’tlove me less because I was born a daughter. My school did not limit me becauseI was a girl. My mentors didn’t assume I would go less far because I might givebirth to a child one day. These influencers were the gender equalityambassadors that made who I am today. They may not know it, but they are theinadvertent feminists who are. And we need more of those. And if you still hatethe word—it is not the word that is important but the idea and the ambitionbehind it. Because not all women have been afforded the same rights that Ihave. In fact, statistically, very few have been。

In 1997, Hilary Clinton made a famous speech inBeijing about women’s rights. Sadly many of the things she wanted to change arestill a reality today。

But what stood out for me the most was that only 30per cent of her audience were male. How can we affect change in the world whenonly half of it is invited or feel welcome to participate in the conversation?

Men—I would like to take this opportunity to extendyour formal invitation. Gender equality is your issue too。

Because to date, I’ve seen my father’s role as aparent being valued less by society despite my needing his presence as a childas much as my mother’s。

I’ve seen young men suffering from mental illnessunable to ask for help for fear it would make them look less “macho”—in fact inthe UK suicide is the biggest killer of men between 20-49; eclipsing roadaccidents, cancer and coronary heart disease. I’ve seen men made fragile andinsecure by a distorted sense of what constitutes male success. Men don’t havethe benefits of equality either。

We don’t often talk about men being imprisoned bygender stereotypes but I can see that that they are and that when they arefree, things will change for women as a natural consequence。

If men don’t have to be aggressive in order to beaccepted women won’t feel compelled to be submissive. If men don’t have tocontrol, women won’t have to be controlled

Both men and women should feel free to be sensitive.Both men and women should feel free to be strong… It is time that we allperceive gender on a spectrum not as two opposing sets of ideals。

If we stop defining each other by what we are not andstart defining ourselves by what we are—we can all be freer and this is whatHeForShe is about. It’s about freedom。

I want men to take up this mantle. So their daughters,sisters and mothers can be free from prejudice but also so that their sons havepermission to be vulnerable and human too—reclaim those parts of themselvesthey abandoned and in doing so be a more true and complete version ofthemselves

You might be thinking who is this Harry Potter girl?And what is she doing up on stage at the UN. It’s a good question and trust meI have been asking myself the same thing. I don’t know if I am qualified to behere. All I know is that I care about this problem. And I want to make itbetter。

And having seen what I’ve seen—and given the chance—Ifeel it is my duty to say something. English statesman Edmund Burke said: “Allthat is needed for the forces of evil to triumph is for enough good men andwomen to do nothing。”

In my nervousness for this speech and in my moments ofdoubt I’ve told myself firmly—if not me, who, if not now, when. If you havesimilar doubts when opportunities are presented to you I hope those words mightbe helpful。

Because the reality is that if we do nothing it willtake 75 years, or for me to be nearly a hundred before women can expect to bepaid the same as men for the same work. 15.5 million girls will be married inthe next 16 years as children. And at current rates it won’t be until 2086before all rural African girls will be able to receive a secondary education。

Since the HeForShe launched in New York last September, I think it would be fair to say that my colleagues and I have been stunned by the response.

The HeForShe conference was watched over 11 million times, sparking 1.2 billion social media conversations, culminating in the #HeForShre hash-tag becoming so popular that Twitter painted it on the walls of its headquarters. Everything from marathons being run, merchandise being created, 15-year-old boys writing to national newspapers deploring female discrimination, young girls collecting hundreds of signatures – it’s all happened in the last four months.

So what is IMPACT 10x10x10? It’s about engaging governments, businesses, and universities and having them make concrete commitments to gender equality. But I want to hear from the human beings that are behind these organizations. I spoke about some of my story in September; what are your stories?

One of the biggest pieces of feedback I’ve had since my speech is that men and women want to help but they aren’t sure how best to do it. Men say they’ve signed the petition. ‘What now?’ The truth is, the ‘what now’ is down to you. What your HeforShe commitment will be is personal and there is no best way. Everything is valid.

IMPACT 10x10x10 is about concrete commitments to change, the visibility of these commitments and the measurability of them, too. How has the campaign impacted me so far?

I’ve had my breath taken away when a fan told me that since watching my speech she has stopped herself being beaten up by her father.

I’ve been stunned by the amount of men in my life that have contacted me since my speech to tell me to keep going, and that they want to make sure that their daughters will still be alive to see a world where women have parity economically and politically. While I would love to claim that uh…this campaign and the results of it are a result of my incredible speech writing skills, I know that it is not.

Being a part of HeForShe for the last two years has been an incredible learning experience for me. There have been some really hard moments and a lot of amazing ones: ones I never could have imagined.

We've crashed the UN website on multiple occasions—sorry about that! We have lit up the Empire State Building, seen HeForShe in Times Square, and made it a term in the Urban Dictionary.

After two billion media impressions, 1.1 million pledged HeforShes have made practical commitments, as have some of the world's leading universities and companies, to make gender equality a priority in their work and within their communities.

Surprisingly though, it was during the hard moments that I made the best discoveries about what it means to be part of this movement.

There is genuinely a spectrum of amazing feminists out there who have not only given me invaluable advice but also broadened my perspective and reinforced my belief that we are all linked.

We all belong to a long history of people who have made sacrifices, some groups much more than others, in order to make indefinably large contributions to our modern lives.

We've seen seismic shifts in culture recently. I couldn't believe my eyes when I turned on the TV to see that Bud Light was pledging gender equality and equal pay as part of their current advertising campaign.

最近我们能在文化领域见证惊天动地的巨变，打开电视的时候简直不敢相信自己的眼睛，我看到百威啤酒居然把性别平等以及男女同酬加入了新广告里。

We already have some amazing things happening, some amazing female leaders, but I don't know if I would have believed you if you had told me two years ago before I made my HeForShe speech that we might have the first female President of the United States—please don't let me down, America! - a female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and possibly for the first time in history, a female UN Secretary General.

While women still only make up such a small percentage of political leadership, to quote the awesome Michelle Obama, "Because of these women, girls and boys all over the world will have real-life examples that women are leaders." In the last two years if I have learned anything, if they have shown me anything, it is that nothing - nothing - is impossible.

And that's why tonight, as well as saying thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you have done, I ask you to recommit yourselves to be a part of gender equality.

I genuinely feel that we are closer to a gender equal world, certainly closer than we were two years ago, and I know that each and every HeForShe has played such a huge part in that. I am proud to have been part of lots of amazing things in my life, but there is nothing that I am prouder of than being part of this.

Two years ago, I launched a campaign called “HeForShe” at the U.N. in New York. I was very nervous before that speech. The nerves were followed by a tremendous high immediately afterwards and a crushing low a few days after that.

My best hopes and my worst fears were confirmed all at once. I had opened Pandora’s Box to a standing ovation and almost simultaneously, a level of critique I had never experienced in my life and the beginning of what would become a series of threats.

The last two years have been a baptism of fire, to say the least… where I learned just how little I know and also, how much. It was my scary first step as an activist, a word I never imagined that I would use to describe myself.

So, reading the applications of activists who applied here for One Young World scholarships was surprising to me. Here I was, reading the stories of people from nearly 200 different countries from around the world with experiences that I couldn’t even imagine.

I mean, I really just – they were so out of this world to me. And yet, their notes looked like my notes. The same themes emerged over and over and over again. There was so much overlap with the things that I had been thinking about and that I had been struggling with.

Because the truth is, it had never been about being an activist. It was about the choice to make myself visible and the choices that you made, to do that, too.

Apart from the significant progress the world has made in the cause for equality, the best thing about the last two years has been this: finding people from such disparate experiences and communities that I found that I have something in common with.

全球性的平权运动已经取得了实质性的进展，除此之外过去这两年内发生的最棒的事情是：认识到这些和我有着截然不同的经历、来自不同群体的人们，但却发现，我们有着彼此相通的共同点。

This is a community of artists, spiritual teachers, dreamers, thinkers, doers, who work together and support each other. For the first time in my life, I found my sisterhood, a brotherhood, whatever, however you want to describe it. I found my tribe. My hope for you while you’re here is that you will find some of your tribe, too. I really needed mine.

这是一个由艺术家、精神导师、梦想家、思想家、实践专家组成的集体，大家携手努力，互相支持。这是我人生中第一次感觉找到了我的姐妹、我的兄弟，无论你们想怎么形容它，我找到了我的部落。在座各位，我也希望你们也能够真正找到自己所属的群体，我需要我的部落。

Bobby Kennedy, when he was senator for New York said, “Each time, a man or woman stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lots of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope. And crossing each other from a million different centers of energy, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest wall of oppression and resistance.”

当罗伯特·肯尼迪还是纽约参议员时，他曾说过：“每一次，当一个男人或女人为了理想挺身而出，或为改善他人的命运而努力奋斗，或与世界不公勇敢抗争，他便发出了微小却充满希望的涟漪。这些涟漪相互交错，来自百万个不同地方的能量汇聚。涟漪筑成一道水流，最后得以冲破那面无比强大的压迫与反抗之墙。”

That’s what we are doing. We, the entire spectrum of the feminist movement, are building an unstoppable current, for which we need ripples of hope from every age, race, ability, walk of life, from every human experience.

这就是我们正在做的事，我们覆盖了女权运动的所有范围，也在形成一道不可阻挡的水流。我们需要充满希望的小涟漪，可以来自任何年龄、种族、能力、职业，拥有任何人生经历。

I feel gender equality is as important as any of the other goals that we are here to discuss. And actually, if anything, it is even more important because it intersects with every single other issue that we face.

我认为性别平等与我们在此讨论的其它任何一个话题都同等重要。如果非要说的话，其实性别平权更为重要，因为它与我们面临的其他任何问题都息息相关。

We all have feminine and masculine energies within us. And both forces need to be lifted up, respected. They need to work together in order to make the world go round.

每个人体内都拥有阴阳相成的力量，这两种能量都需要被弘扬、被尊重，需要两者互根互依，才能保持世界的运转。

Each of you are here at One Young World because you do something important. And it is so exciting to see you all come together in one room because One Young World isn’t about saying what I, each of us, individually can do, but what we can do – working together, supporting, and listening to each other.

参加世界青年峰会的在座每一位都是因为你们有所作为。非常激动能够看到大家在此共聚一堂，因为世界青年峰会不是说我们每一个人能够做到什么，而是我们一起能够做什么—携手共进，互相支持，彼此聆听。

It’s in that spirit that I am delighted to introduce nine activists who are the first recipients of a One Young World scholarship that I am very honored to have in my name. They are working to secure real progress towards a gender-equal world, and I hope that their stories inspire you as much as they have inspired me.

本着这种精神，我很高兴给各位介绍首次荣获世界青年峰会奖学金的9位活动家，我很荣幸奖学金能以我的名义颁发。他们为一个性别平权的世界而取得了实质性的进展，我希望他们的故事也能够鼓舞到你，就像他们也激励到我一样。

In a moment, I am going to ask them to come onto the stage. But before I do, I want to offer a few statements of my own that I’ve struggled with and continue to struggle with on a daily basis but that I’ve found inspiring.

过一会儿，我便会邀请他们上台。但在那之前，我想分享几个我自己也在为之奋斗的句子，每天都在继续努力达成，对我来说非常鼓舞人心。

I want to ask you to take a moment, you can keep your eyes closed or keep them open, and ask yourself if these have any truth for you in them.

I am willing to be seen.

I am willing to speak up.

I am willing to keep going.

I am willing to listen to what others have to say.

I am willing to go forward even when I feel alone.

I am willing to be my biggest, best-est, most powerful self.

我愿意被看见。我愿意站出来发声。我愿意继续前进。我愿意倾听他人的话语。我愿意在感到孤单时依然选择向前。我愿意每晚入睡时，自己的内心平和安定。我愿意成为最强大、最完善、最有力的自己。

These seven statements scare the absolute shit out of me. But I know that they are at the crux of it all. At the end of the day, and when all is said and done, I know that these are the ways that I want to have lived my life.

这7个句子真的把我自己也给吓坏了，但我明白它们有多重要、多关键，但是最终，归根结底，我知道这就是我自己想要过的人生。

I know each one of you probably will have encountered one of these statements in the last 48 hours. And if you have, thank you for being here. I appreciate it. It’s truly an honor to be here with you all. Thank you!

I graduated from university four years ago. I had always dreamed of going, and I know how fortunate I am to have had the opportunity to do so. 

四年前，我大学毕业。我曾经一直梦想着自己可以去大学读书，并庆幸自己能有机会实现。

Brown became my home, my community, and I took the ideas and the experiences I had there into all of my social interactions, into my work place, into my politics, into all aspects of my life. I know that my university experience shaped who I am. And of course it does for many people.

布朗大学成为了我的家，我的归属。我把我在布朗大学里的想法和经历贯彻到我的社交、工作、政治以及生活的方方面面。我知道我在大学时期的经历塑造了今天的自己。当然，很多人都是如此。

But what if our experience in university shows us that women don't belong in leadership? What if it shows us that, yes, women can study, but they shouldn't lead a seminar? What if, as still in many places around the world, it tells us that women don't belong there at all? What if, as is the case in far too many universities, we are given the message that sexual violence isn't actually a form of violence? 

但是，如果大学告诉我们女性不能成为领袖；告诉我们是的，女性可以求学，但不能主持研讨会；告诉我们，就像世界上很多地区仍然表现的那样，女性根本不能上大学；像太多校园里的情况那样，让我们接受性暴力其实不属于暴力，我们该怎么办？

But, we know that if you change students' experiences so that they have different expectations of the world around them, expectations of equality, society will change.

但是我们知道，如果大学改变了学生的经历，让他们对周遭的世界、对男女平等有了不同的期待，那么整个社会就将改变。

As we leave home for the first time to study at the places that we have worked so hard to get, we must not see or experience double standards. We need to see equal respect, leadership and pay.

当我们第一次离开家去千辛万苦考取的学校求学时，我们不应当目睹和经历双重标准。我们应该看到同等的尊重、领导力和回报。

The university experience must tell women that their brain power is valued, and not just that, but that they belong within the leadership of the university itself. 

大学不仅要告诉女性她们的头脑是有价值的，还要告诉她们在大学里女性也可以成为领袖人物。

And so importantly right now, the experience must make it clear, that the safety of women, minorities, and anyone who may be vulnerable is a right, not a privilege.

现如今同样重要的是，大学必须清楚地让学生知道：女性、少数族群和其他弱势群体的安全问题绝不是特权，而是他们的基本权利。

A right that will be respected by a community that believes and supports survivors, and that recognizes that when one person's safety is violated, everyone feels their own safety is violated. 

这种基本权利将被一个支持幸存者并且相信若某一人的安全被侵犯，所有人都感同身受的社会所尊重。

A university should be a place of refuge that takes action against all forms of violence. That's why we believe that students should leave university believing in, striving for and expecting societies of true equality. Society of true equality in every sense. And universities have the power to be a vital catalyst for that change. 

大学应该是一个反对各种暴力行为的庇护所。这就是为什么我们认为一个离开大学的毕业生应该坚信且期待一个真正平等的社会，并为之努力奋斗。真正的平等应该体现在社会各个方面，大学有能力成为这种变革的重要加速器。

Our ten impact champions have made this commitment and with their work, we know that they will inspire students, and other universities and schools across the world to do better. 

我们的十位影响力冠军为此做出了巨大贡献。通过他们的工作，我们知道他们将会激励学生和世界上其他的大学和学院做得更好。
