A group of five Chinese tourists faced heavy criticism in both Japan and China after leaving a three-bedroom Osaka guest house in a state of disarray during a three-day stay from November 18 to 21. The incident, revealed by a Japanese blogger using the handle @roketdan2 on X, included photos showing food packaging and debris strewn across the property, Shirakabanoyado Mutsuki (White Birch House).
The host, whose business was significantly disrupted, temporarily removed the property from booking platforms after the incident. Booking.com lists the nightly rate for the property at around US$400. Cleaning such accommodations in Japan typically costs between 5,000 and 15,000 yen (US$33 to US$99), but it remains unclear how much the host charged for the extensive cleanup.
The blogger’s post, which gained 3.6 million views, sparked outrage among online observers in both countries. Many criticized the tourists’ behavior, which one Japanese commenter suggested, “Guest houses should charge foreigners 10 times the rate compared to Japanese guests.”
Chinese netizens also condemned the group, emphasizing that such behavior is unacceptable in China as well. “They should compensate the host and be held accountable for their actions,” one user remarked.
This is not the first time foreign tourists in Japan have been at the center of controversy. In August, a Nagano hotel publicly sought two foreign guests who left without paying a 57,000-yen (US$380) bill.
