A bizarre medical emergency unfolded in Guangzhou when a 53-year-old man was rushed to Zhujiang Hospital on January 26 due to severe abdominal pain. Upon questioning, doctors discovered that the man had inserted a 7x20 cm zucchini into his rectum, which he was unable to remove.
The hospital's colorectal specialists initially attempted to extract the vegetable through non-surgical means. However, due to the zucchini's unusual size and rigidity, the procedure proved unsuccessful. The task was then handed over to Professor Xie Lang’s gastrointestinal surgery team, who performed a three-hour-long surgery to safely remove the object.
Dr. He Jianping, head of the hospital’s colorectal department, noted during the operation that the man's rectal muscles appeared unusually lax. This led doctors to suspect a history of frequent insertion of foreign objects.
Medical experts warn that inserting foreign objects into the rectum can cause serious health complications, including internal injuries, infections, and even life-threatening conditions if the object cannot be removed promptly.
The case has drawn widespread attention on Chinese social media, with many netizens expressing disbelief and humor at the situation. “Did he think he was a storage unit?” one joked, while others urged people to seek healthier and safer ways to address personal needs.
The patient is reported to be recovering, though doctors recommend psychological counseling to address the underlying reasons for his behavior.
