The recent episode of All the Way with Blossoms left viewers deeply moved as veteran Chinese actress Liu Xiaoqing revealed the hardships she's faced in recent years. From being scammed out of her life savings to enduring public criticism from younger colleagues, Liu’s story has struck a chord with audiences.
The 74-year-old actress was initially criticized by fellow cast members for her tardiness during a group activity. Younger actress Li Xiaoran, in particular, voiced her displeasure in a blunt manner, even organizing a meeting to criticize Liu for being late and carrying too much luggage. Li openly accused Liu of being a burden to the group, leaving her feeling humiliated.
The situation escalated when Li brought up trivial issues, like lending Liu lipstick and holding onto grudges about minor incidents. While such complaints seemed petty, they highlighted the generational gap and the subtle “hierarchical bullying” Liu endured on the show.
The truth behind Liu’s delay was only revealed later during a private conversation with fellow cast member Ni Ping. Liu disclosed that she had been dealing with five lawsuits simultaneously. These legal battles stemmed from cases of fraud where she lost her life savings, including cash, jewelry, and even her retirement funds.
One of the scams involved a security guard she had hired to protect her valuables, who ended up stealing them. Another involved a fraudulent partnership to promote traditional Chinese crafts under Liu’s name, which turned out to be a scheme to swindle her.
When Ni Ping asked if her family was aware of the situation, Liu's response was even more devastating. She revealed that her remaining family ties were strained, with some family members being equally exploitative. As a childless woman, Liu said she often felt like an easy target for those around her.
Upon hearing Liu’s struggles, Ni Ping and other cast members were moved to tears. Ni acknowledged that her own life had been relatively smooth compared to Liu’s, who has faced numerous hardships. Zhang Qiang, another cast member, expressed her admiration for Liu’s resilience and even offered to take care of her in her old age.
The tension between Liu and Li Xiaoran also eased. After learning about Liu’s challenges, Li broke down in tears and apologized for her behavior. She even suggested opening a bar in Dali with Liu to provide her with a stable income in the future. While some viewers questioned the sincerity of these gestures, others saw them as genuine attempts to make amends.
Liu Xiaoqing is no stranger to adversity. Once a top actress in China and a six-time winner of the prestigious Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Awards, she experienced a dramatic fall from grace when she declared bankruptcy years ago. At one point, all 27 of her properties were seized, forcing her to start over by taking small acting gigs for as little as 50 yuan a day.
Despite these setbacks, Liu has always demonstrated incredible resilience. On the show, she maintained her composure, even lightheartedly remarking, “I’ve never been stuck on a page because I’ve never been in the book.” Her ability to handle criticism and setbacks with grace has earned her admiration from both cast members and viewers alike.
Throughout the three episodes of All the Way with Blossoms, Liu has consistently shared messages of positivity and perseverance. Whether it’s washing dishes without complaint or preparing breakfast for the group, she has shown a willingness to contribute without expecting special treatment.
When Zhang Qiang commented on Liu’s magnanimity, comparing her own “broad heart” to Liu’s “ocean of forgiveness,” it was clear that Liu’s presence had a profound impact on the cast. Even though offers of financial support poured in from her fellow participants, Liu graciously declined, stating that she would continue to rebuild her life independently.
“I’ve lost everything before, and I can do it all over again,” Liu said with determination. Her optimistic outlook and unshakable strength serve as an inspiration, especially to younger generations who may never experience the highs and lows that have defined Liu’s extraordinary life.
As the episode concluded, the cast seemed united in their support for Liu Xiaoqing. Ni Ping even declared at the dinner table, “From today onward, we must all protect and care for Sister Xiaoqing!” Li Xiaoran, previously one of Liu’s harshest critics, also embraced her and offered a heartfelt apology.
