A funeral in the Dominican Republic took a bizarre turn when mourners claimed to witness the deceased man opening his eyes inside his coffin. The unsettling moment occurred as family and friends gathered to bid their final farewells, leaving many in shock and disbelief.
Images from the funeral showed the man dressed in white, lying in a coffin with a glass window above his face. Initially, his eyes appeared closed, but some attendees noticed his eyelids seemingly flickering. A mourner snapped a photo, and in that instant, his eyes appeared partially open, sparking alarm among those present.
One family member reportedly questioned if the man might still be alive, exclaiming, "Who knows if he's fighting for his life?" Some mourners even considered calling an ambulance, while others speculated on more rational explanations.
Several locals suggested the apparent eye movement could have been an illusion caused by the reflection of mobile phone flashlights. One attendee remarked, "Post-mortem muscle memory sometimes manifests in corpses," while another dismissed it as "just a trick of the light." Others took a more humorous approach, joking that the deceased was "checking who came to his funeral" or had "remembered he left his phone unlocked."
This incident is not the first to blur the line between life and death. In 2023, a Thai woman, thought to have died while being transported home, gasped awake inside the van carrying her body. Similarly, in 2022, a Peruvian woman shocked her family by banging on her coffin during her funeral, only to pass away later in the hospital.
Another chilling case occurred in 2020 when a 20-year-old Michigan woman was pronounced dead but showed signs of life just moments before being embalmed. Mortuary staff discovered her eyes open, narrowly preventing a tragic mistake.
