An Indian blogger recently interviewed Lokesh Ji, an Indian man who has been living in China for six years after marrying a woman from Beijing. The interview, which touched on topics such as dowry, cultural differences, and marriage traditions, quickly went viral, sparking heated discussions among Indian netizens.
During the interview, Lokesh revealed that his wife’s family provided him with a car and a house as part of the dowry. When asked about his life in China, he shared that he now lives with his wife's parents, and they have been very accepting of him.
“My in-laws have no problem with me living in their house. They don’t feel insecure about having a foreigner in the family,” Lokesh said. He also mentioned that his wife does not particularly enjoy Indian food, and neither of them cooks Indian dishes at home.
When discussing their wedding, Lokesh revealed that although he initially wanted to have a traditional Indian wedding, the plan fell apart due to India's caste system.
“In 2019, I wanted to host an Indian-style wedding when I visited India, but it was too complicated. Everyone knows that caste plays a big role in India, and it just created chaos. Eventually, we had a traditional Chinese wedding instead,” he explained.
His wife, who joined the interview, expressed her admiration for Indian culture, food, and hospitality. “I love Indian food and culture. The people there are very warm and friendly,” she said. She also shared her regret about not being able to visit the Taj Mahal on her last trip to India.
The interview quickly gained traction online, with many Indian netizens reacting strongly, particularly to the revelation that Lokesh received a house and a car as part of the dowry.
One Indian netizen commented: “Why is it that Chinese women marry Indian men and offer dowries, but when Chinese women marry Chinese men, they demand houses, cars, and betrothal gifts?”
Another joked: “Maybe I should move to China. It seems like it’s easier to get a house and car there!”
Some users praised the cultural openness of Chinese families, with one commenting: “In India, many families still discriminate based on caste, but in China, it seems that people are more accepting of foreign grooms.”
However, not everyone was convinced. Some questioned the financial arrangements behind such marriages, with one user saying: “Are we sure it was a dowry? Maybe he’s just staying in his wife’s family home, and the car is also under their name.”
Others pointed out that cultural expectations differ between countries: “In China, it's common for the bride’s family to help with housing. In India, it's usually the opposite. It’s just a difference in tradition, not about ‘double standards.’”
