An Indian court has sentenced five men to death for the brutal gang rape and murder of a teenage girl, along with the killings of her father and three-year-old niece. The crime, which shocked the nation, occurred in January 2021 in the central state of Chhattisgarh.
The victims, members of a disadvantaged tribal community, had been waiting for public transport when the men offered them lifts on their motorbikes. According to public prosecutor Sunil Kumar Mishra, the perpetrators later attacked the girl’s father, beating him to death as he tried to stop the assault on his daughter. They also killed the girl’s toddler-aged niece. The teenager, found unconscious by villagers days later, succumbed to her injuries en route to the hospital.
On Wednesday, the court announced the death sentence for the five men after finding them guilty of rape and triple murder. Mishra confirmed the verdict, calling it a step toward justice for the victims. A sixth man, whose involvement in the rape was not proven, received a life sentence for his role in the killings.
India continues to impose the death penalty, though executions are rare in practice. The case highlights the ongoing crisis of sexual violence in the country, where nearly 90 rapes are reported daily, according to 2022 statistics. Activists believe the actual number of incidents is much higher due to widespread underreporting.
The gruesome nature of this attack echoes the infamous 2012 gang rape and murder of a young woman on a Delhi bus, which triggered nationwide protests and demands for tougher laws to protect women. Four men convicted in that case were executed in 2020.
