A plastic surgeon has sparked heated debate after performing a vasectomy on himself, describing the procedure as a "gift" for his wife. The video of the operation, which he shared on social media, has amassed over 4 million views.
Dr. Chen Weinong, a specialist in eyelid, nose, and breast augmentation, conducted the procedure on January 9. Despite not being a urologist, he insisted that his surgical skills made him confident in handling the operation.
"Female sterilization is more complex, while male vasectomies are simpler. We just locate the sperm duct and tie it off," Chen explained in the video. Sitting cross-legged, he meticulously guided viewers through the 11-step procedure, including administering anesthesia, cutting, and suturing. At one point, he winced and exclaimed, "Oh, this is super sore!" After completing the surgery, which lasted over an hour, he admitted feeling exhausted and later described the post-surgery pain as significant but manageable by the next day.
While some praised Chen for his responsibility as a husband, others questioned whether a plastic surgeon should perform such a procedure. Critics also expressed concerns about the potential risks of self-surgery. In response, Chen defended his qualifications, stating that he holds a surgical license and that a nurse and three doctors, including a supervising urologist, were present to ensure safety. "The procedure was fully self-funded and conducted at a legally authorized location," he emphasized.
The viral video has sparked widespread discussion online. One commenter praised Chen’s decision: "You are very thoughtful. Male sterilization is much easier than female sterilization." Another cautioned against DIY procedures: "Please consult a doctor. The surgery is quick and affordable."
