An international flight from China to Kansas faced an unexpected emergency 20 minutes after takeoff when a Chinese passenger traveling alone collapsed in the aisle. The cabin crew promptly called for medical assistance, and a doctor onboard came to the passenger’s aid.
The passenger, who had a history of hypertension and diabetes, had experienced brief chest discomfort and sweating before the incident. The doctor assessed the situation, noting pale complexion, low blood pressure (90/60), and a heart rate of 80 bpm. After providing oxygen, medication, oral saline, and nitroglycerin, the passenger's condition stabilized, with blood pressure improving to 105/82.
The flight crew then consulted the doctor on whether to return to the airport or continue the journey. The doctor advised continuing to Kansas, where the passenger disembarked safely. The airline expressed gratitude by offering a small gift and required the doctor to sign a liability waiver before landing, a move that sparked controversy.
The incident has reignited discussions about the lack of "Good Samaritan laws" in China, which would legally protect individuals offering emergency aid. Many online expressed sympathy for the doctor’s predicament.
One user commented, “Doctors are being discouraged from helping others in public due to the fear of legal repercussions.” Another added, “Without proper legal protection, these liability waivers only increase risks for medical professionals.”
Some defended the airline’s actions. “You can’t completely blame the airline. If something went wrong, the passenger's family might sue everyone involved, including the airline, the doctor, and even unrelated parties,” a netizen explained, referencing past incidents of similar lawsuits.
The debate also extended to social media, with references to similar experiences on high-speed trains and buses. A healthcare worker shared their thoughts: “These situations make doctors hesitate to act, even in emergencies. It’s heartbreaking.”
