A recent post by a U.S. man on RedNote, also known as Xiaohongshu, featuring old photos of himself with Chinese actress Song Zuer, has sparked widespread speculation about a possible romantic relationship. However, both the man and Song’s studio have firmly denied these rumors.
Song Zuer, a 26-year-old actress and singer with 16 million followers on Chinese social media, is known for her sweet looks and warm personality. She debuted as a child actress in The Sea and Sky Boundless and gained fame in 2009 for her role as Nezha in the mythological drama The Prelude of Lotus Lantern.
On January 17, Brett Keefe, a man based in the United States, shared nostalgic photos on RedNote, describing his “wonderful memories” with Song during her time abroad and expressing a desire to reconnect. The photos showed Song smiling and hugging Keefe and his family, leading some netizens to speculate about a past romance. One commenter directly asked if they had been in a relationship.
Keefe quickly denied the romantic rumors, explaining that Song was like family to him. “She is like a sister to me. She loves us, and we love her,” he wrote in response. Keefe clarified that the photos were taken when Song stayed with his family during a study trip abroad.
The post quickly went viral on Chinese social media, garnering over 150 million views. However, some users criticized Keefe for waiting years to reach out. One netizen accused him of leveraging the “TikTok refugee” trend - where U.S. users, frustrated by TikTok's temporary suspension, flocked to RedNote - to gain attention. Keefe defended himself, stating that U.S. social media platforms offered no reliable way to contact Song earlier. “I do not want her money,” he emphasized.
Song’s studio stepped in to address the rumors. Her agent told Sina Entertainment that Keefe was not an ex-boyfriend but the younger brother of Song’s host family. To support this claim, the agent released photos showing Song with the host family in a harmonious and happy setting. The studio firmly denied any romantic connection.
Shortly after the post gained traction, Keefe’s RedNote account was deleted, and his post disappeared. It remains unclear whether he has successfully reconnected with Song.
The incident has sparked mixed reactions online. While some netizens criticized those who spread malicious rumors, others expressed regret over Keefe’s apparent departure from the platform. One commenter wrote: “This American boy just wanted to reconnect with the Chinese sister he cherished, but rude remarks hurt his feelings.” Another urged Keefe to continue trusting Chinese social media, assuring him he would always be welcome.
