A man riding an electric bike in Hangzhou was arrested after groping a woman walking her dog, triggering public outrage.
The incident occurred on the evening of Jan 19 near Yuhangtang Road in Gongshu District. The victim, identified as Xiao Jie (pseudonym), was out for a walk with her large Alaskan Malamute when an unknown man passed by on an e-bike. As he rode past, he suddenly reached out and touched her inappropriately before speeding away.
Shocked and shaken, Xiao Jie quickly realized she had been assaulted and called the police. Due to the suspect’s quick escape, she couldn’t get a clear look at his face, only recalling that he wore a dark short-sleeved shirt.
Upon receiving the report, officers from Xiangfu Police Station immediately launched an investigation. Surveillance footage showed the man deliberately slowing down and trailing the victim before seizing the opportunity to grope her. Interestingly, her large dog remained oblivious, continuing to pant playfully, a detail that some netizens later found darkly ironic.
Through further analysis, police identified the suspect as a man surnamed Pang (pseudonym). On Jan 24, officers located and arrested him at his residence.
During questioning, Pang admitted to the act, claiming he had consumed a significant amount of alcohol that night. He said he had been on his way home when he noticed several young women in stylish outfits. Upon spotting the victim, he was emboldened by alcohol and ignored the presence of her large dog. He then rode onto the sidewalk, slowed down, and groped her as he passed.
Pang has since confessed to the crime and was sentenced to seven days of administrative detention for sexual harassment. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of public vigilance and swift law enforcement action against such offenses.
