A company in Shenzhen has sparked outrage after photographing employees using the restroom and publicly displaying the images to shame them for taking too long.
Lixun Diansheng, a firm based in Guangdong province, reportedly printed and posted images of several employees inside the company restroom as a punishment for prolonged bathroom breaks. According to reports, the company suspected some workers of smoking or playing mobile games in the toilet and claimed they failed to respond when colleagues knocked on the door. To address this, company staff used a ladder to take photos of the employees mid-use and displayed them on the restroom wall as a warning to others.
The company justified its actions by stating that smoking was banned in restrooms and that the photos served as a deterrent against such behavior. However, the images were removed a few hours later after management decided they “did not look good.”
The incident, which reportedly occurred months ago, was only recently exposed online, triggering public backlash. Many netizens condemned the company for violating employee privacy and treating workers in a humiliating manner.
Zhu Xue, a lawyer at Celue Law Firm, told Chinese media outlet Jimu News that such actions likely infringe upon employees' rights. “Companies should not resort to illegal means to manage employee behavior,” Zhu said.
The company’s apparent lack of legal awareness also drew criticism from social media users. “Their first concern was that the photos didn’t look good, not that they were illegal,” one person commented. Another wrote, “Are they employees or slaves?”
