A 25-year-old woman in the UK has pleaded guilty to a bizarre cybercrime that has gained international attention. Rhiannon Evans has been charged with what is being called “cyber-farting” after she repeatedly sent videos of herself passing gas to her boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend, causing the recipient distress and anxiety.

The unusual case, the first of its kind in the UK, was heard in a court in Caernarfon, North Wales. Prosecutor Diane Williams explained to the magistrates how Evans had sent multiple videos in which she placed the camera on her bottom and deliberately passed gas. The videos, sent over the Christmas holiday period, were intended as a form of harassment.

According to reports, Evans sent three videos on December 22, followed by four more between Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Each clip allegedly featured her smiling at the camera while performing the act. The victim, Deborah Prytherch, told the court that she felt “bombarded” by the messages and feared for her safety, claiming the videos had caused her significant anxiety.

When police arrested Evans at her home, she admitted to sending the messages but insisted she was unaware that her actions could be considered a criminal offense. She argued that she was merely defending her partner, whom she believed was being mistreated. Evans also questioned why the victim had not simply blocked her if the messages were so distressing.

Despite her defense, the court handed down a 12-month community order, requiring Evans to complete 15 rehabilitation sessions and undergo 60 days of alcohol abstinence monitoring. She was also ordered to pay £299 (approximately $370) in compensation and court fees. Additionally, a two-year restraining order was placed against her, preventing further contact with the victim.

Following the ruling, Evans spoke to The Sun, calling the case “petty” and claiming she was shocked that something as trivial as farting could land her in court. “We are living in a very ‘snowflake’ generation,” she remarked. “I never thought farting would get me into this much trouble.”
