A massage parlor in Shenzhen has sparked controversy by offering an exclusive 9-yuan massage, but only to women who meet at least one of its 27 high-end criteria. The promotion, which appears on a popular review app, aims to attract "exceptional" female customers by setting a list of qualifications based on wealth, status, and social influence.
The discounted service includes an 80-minute full-body Chinese meridian therapy massage, which typically costs around 200 yuan. However, to be eligible, clients must meet at least one condition, such as owning an iPhone 16 Pro Max, driving a luxury car like an Audi, Mercedes, or Porsche, or residing in a prestigious community. Other qualifications include employment at major tech firms like Tencent or Huawei, holding Hong Kong or Macau residency, or having traveled to Europe or the US. Social media influencers with over 500,000 followers, brand founders, doctors, and bankers also qualify.
A message from the shop reads: "If you do not meet the conditions, keep working hard in 2025!" It claims the promotion is meant to encourage people to strive for success, rather than for personal gratification.
A staff member confirmed to local media that customers must provide proof of their eligibility before receiving the service. Despite the strict entry requirements, over 100 orders had been placed on the app as of the latest update.
The campaign has drawn mixed reactions online. Some users questioned whether the promotion was merely a marketing gimmick, arguing that women who meet such criteria would not be concerned about saving 9 yuan on a massage. Others speculated that the parlor was using the offer to attract high-spending clients for potential upselling.
Legal concerns were also raised. One netizen pointed out that the parlor’s selective criteria might violate China’s Consumer Rights Protection Law, which guarantees fair trade practices. Another commenter criticized the requirements as "superficial," stating that success cannot be solely measured by material possessions.
