A young boy in Zizhong country, Sichuan Province, has sparked a major accident after throwing a firecracker into a sewage pit, triggering a powerful methane explosion that flipped vehicles and caused widespread damage.
The incident occurred on January 30 in Zizhong County, Neijiang City, and has since gone viral online, with authorities now investigating the case. Video footage circulating on social media shows the shocking moment when a car was lifted off the ground and overturned due to the explosion. Reports indicate that multiple vehicles were damaged, including a Lincoln, a Lexus, an Audi A8, and a red Porsche. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported.
According to the local government’s publicity department, the blast was caused by the ignition of biogas - primarily methane - produced in the sewage system. Methane is highly flammable and, when trapped in enclosed spaces like sewage pits, can result in powerful explosions if exposed to an open flame.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the boy ran away immediately after throwing the firecracker. Authorities quickly launched an investigation and located the child within an hour. As of the latest reports, both the boy and his parents have been taken into police custody for further questioning.
The incident has sparked widespread discussion among netizens, with many emphasizing the serious consequences of the boy’s actions. Comments on Chinese social media platforms reflect a mix of shock, criticism, and concern:
“This is a huge disaster. The parents will have to pay a lot in compensation.”
“Not only do they have to pay for the cars, but also for the sewage system repairs.”
“Parents, please check your mail. A hefty bill is coming your way.”
“Kids will be kids, but their parents should be held responsible for the damages.”
The explosion’s financial repercussions could be severe. One social media user, claiming to be the child’s relative, stated:
“It's my nephe - the estimated compensation is no less than 5.8 million yuan.”
In response, another user joked:
“Tell your brother-in-law to livestream the punishment on major platforms. Maybe the donations will cover the damages.”
A separate user estimated that the damages to private vehicles alone could total around 5.8 million yuan, while the municipal repairs might exceed 15 million yuan.
Another local resident added: “This happened right next to my house. They’ve already started selling property and borrowing money. The sheer despair of this situation is unimaginable.”
