Chinese zither is a traditional Chinese musical instruments. It has a history of more than 2,500 years. It is known as the “oriental piano”.
The shape of the zither is like an empty box. But it’s not heavy. It’s around 20 to 30 pounds. People are often surprised at how easily they can carry it. There was 13 strings at one time, and later increased to 16 strings, 18 strings, 21 strings, etc. Most of the modern zithers have 21 strings. At first, the strings were made of silk. In the 20th century, metal strings began to be used. Today, most performers choose multi-material strings.
The zither is easy to learn, so there are a large number of learners. But it is hard to be skilled, so it takes a long time to become a good learner. This instrument does not only play traditional Chinese music, but also popular songs.

Dizi — a Chinese Transverse Flute

The dizi is a kind of Chinese transverse flute. They generally have six or more finger holes. Most of them are made of bamboo. Some of them are made of wood, plastic, stone, or even jade.
笛子是中国的一种横笛。笛子通常有六个指孔以上。大多数笛子是用竹制的。有些笛子是由木材、塑料、石头甚至玉石制成的。
Xiao — a Chinese Vertical End-Blown Flute
箫——中国竖笛
The xiao is a Chinese vertical end-blown flute. Usually, it is made of bamboo and has holes on the top.
箫是一种中国竖笛。它通常是用竹子做的，上方有洞。
Hulusi — the Cucurbit Flute
葫芦丝——葫芦箫
A hulusi has three bamboo pipes and a gourd wind chest at the end with the mouthpiece. The hulusi is popular with primary and middle school students.

Suona — the Chinese Trumpet

The suona is a very expressive instrument. It is very popular in China’s vast countryside in funerals, weddings and festivals.

Gu — The Chinese Drum
鼓——中国鼓
It is played with two wooden sticks. The tone of the sound produced by the drum depends on the strength of the hit and which part of the drum skin is hit.
它是用两根木棍演奏的。鼓发出的声音的音调取决于击打的强度以及鼓皮的哪一部分被击打。
