Xiamen's AI industry leads Fujian

Fujian authorities recently released the region's list of candidates for official recognition as a provincial AI industry development project. Xiamen led the province with 12 projects in various fields such as new energy, transportation, government affairs, healthcare and cybersecurity.

Torch Group representatives last week announced the arrival of three institutions in Xiamen Science City Incubator II: the Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and International Technology Transfer Center; the Wuhan University Xiamen Technology Transfer Center, and; the China-Iran (Xiamen) Technology Transfer Center. Official added that the arrivals will foster scientific and technological innovation achievements.

Xiamen recently hosted an official launch ceremony for FedEx's upgraded freight route connecting Xiamen and Memphis, Tennessee. The event also officially opened Xiamen International Port Operation Center.

FedEx is currently the only international express company to operate an all-cargo international route via Xiamen. The route departs from Xiamen and includes stopovers in Incheon, the Republic of Korea and Anchorage, Alaska, before arriving in Memphis.

FedEx signed a strategic cooperative agreement last March with the city of Xiamen. City officials called the new route and operation center significant steps in FedEx's implementation of the agreement.

City officials added that the initiatives will enhance Xiamen's international competitiveness in the logistics sector and contribute to its development as an international logistics hub and a logistics center city on China's southeast coast.

The Blue Dream Melody cruise ship recently arrived from Shanghai at the Xiamen International Cruise Center. The vessel is set to embark on a 33-night voyage around Asia. The cruise is the first ultra-long voyage to southeast Asia departing from a domestic home port and the only ultra-long voyage departing from China in the past decade. It marks the first time that Xiamen Port has operated a dual home port voyage with Shanghai.

The inaugural Xiamen-Kinmen youth baseball tourney debuted last weekend at the Xiangan campus of Xiamen University Affiliated Keji High School. The league featured U12 and U15 divisions. The tournament included teams from Xiamen and Kinmen and featured nearly 100 total participants.

The U12 teams included Kinmen's Zhongzheng primary school team and Xiamen's Ruijing primary school team. The U15 teams included Kinmen county's team and Xiamen's U15 team. The event also included youth exchange activities between Xiamen and Kinmen athletes.

Local construction officials announced recently the commencement on construction of the cargo area for the upcoming airport in Xiangan. The China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Group is overseeing the construction. The project will cover a total area of about 90,000 square meters, including a cargo terminal, a multi-functional building and a parking lot. The facility will be capable of handling 430,000 tons of cargo and mail annually.

City officials recently announced approval for the development of a second Worker's Cultural Palace. The project is located in Xinglin, Jimei. The site is bordered by Xinglin East Road, Gaopu Road and Gaopu village. The facility will include an indoor stadium, a cultural activity hall, an activity square, parking spaces and auxiliary function rooms.

Xiamen International School last weekend hosted its Model United Nations Conference at the Academy of Arts and Design on Gulangyu. A total of 110 students from over 40 countries participated in the conference. Students hailed from the international schools of Beijing, Chengdu, Nanjing, Xian and Xiamen.

Event officials said that the conference served as a platform for students from different countries to exchange ideas and cooperate by simulating U.N. procedures. The event included in-depth discussions, negotiations and decision-making on a number of international topics.

The city of Xiamen recently hosted the annual Cross-Strait Principals Forum. More than 200 principals of primary and secondary schools (including vocational schools) from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan gathered at the event. This year's forum included a focus on educational transformation in the age of AI.

The Chinese Society of Education, the city of Xiamen and the Taiwan Provincial Education Association organized the event. Xiamen’s education bureau, the Xiamen Federation of Taiwan Compatriots and the Xiamen Education Society hosted the forum.

The forum began in 2007 and includes participants from Beijing, Chongqing, Fujian, Gansu, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangsu, Shaanxi, Shanghai, Sichuan, Tianjin, Xinjiang and Zhejiang.

The China Association of Urban Environmental Sanitation recently released a ranking of household waste incineration plants. The Xiangan Renewable Energy Power Plant scored the highest in Fujian and became the second of Xiamen's two plants to earn a national AAA rating. The Xiamen Municipal Environmental Energy Company operates both facilities.

The facilities in Xiangan and Haicang have a daily waste incineration capacity of 5,450 tons and an annual waste treatment capacity of approximately 1.8 million tons. The plants generate roughly 820 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually. About 730 million kilowatt hours are grid-connected, enough to meet the electricity needs of about 120,000 households.
