From movies to pastries to design, Suzhou has expanded her international presence winning many awards.
The Golden Angel Awards ceremony of the 2024 (20th) Chinese American Film Festival was held in Los Angeles, the U.S. recently. The Best Chinese Opera Feature went to the Suzhou-made movie Legend of National Treasure.
Adapted from the same-name Suzhou opera, the movie unfolds with Pan Dayu and her family's protection and donation of two ding vessels, depicting the Chinese people's patriotic pursuits of propriety and culture.
Steeped in history, Suzhou opera was included in the first batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage lists in 2006.
The 2024 iteration of Cake International took place in the UK recently. The Wujiang-based Tangwang Guochao Cultural and Creative (Suzhou) Co. secured the Best in Show award in the competition.
Dubbed the "Oscar in the cake community," Cake International is the biggest cake decorating and baking event in the world. Tangwang won seven gold medals and one silver medal at Cake International, setting an unprecedented historic record for the Chinese team on a high note.
Winner of the Best in Show and Gold Award, the fondant cake Chi Ling was crafted based on the song of the same name. It portrayed a heroine with a noble patriotic sentiment during the war years.
Aside from Chi Ling, gold-winning creations such as Yang Jian, Dun Huang, and Panda Hero drew inspiration from Chinese classic figures and traditional culture, stunning the world with the beauty of Chinese styles.
The FRAME Awards ceremony event was hosted in Hong Kong recently. Gu Wu Xuan Bookstore (Former Residence of Zhang Taiyan) was shortlisted in the coveted Executional (Best Use of Colour) category. It is one of the international design competitions with the biggest global recognition within the design industry.
Situated at No. 38 Jinfan Road, the residence, dating back to 1932, belonged to Zhang Taiyan, an eminent scholar of Chinese nationalism. In his late years, Zhang housed his collection, engaged in writing, received guests, and lived in this residence. In 2023, Gu Wu Xuan Bookstore took over its operation and renovated this centuries-old mansion to create a comprehensive space that combines books, traditional culture, and the study of Chinese classics.
The site comprises three mixed-style houses built during the Republican period (1911-1949), showcasing a harmonious blend of Chinese and Western architectural styles in the facades. The exterior features plain brick walls, Suzhou-style wooden lattice windows, Chinese-style pavilions, and Roman columns.

As for the color, the design team distilled three distinct shades of green: the ash green in the grass, the slightly jade-toned green characteristic of camphor trees, and the vibrant green of fruits hanging on branches. The color represents the social impression Mr. Zhang received, echoes his strong inner personality, and symbolizes the budding of new ideas in his era.
