For a long time, a career was what you went for. Not anymore. In their search for happiness, more and more people find out that pursuing your calling is much more rewarding.
The idea of a “calling” goes back a long way. Initially, it was mostly used to describe a religious experience or a supernatural force that was hard to ignore and made you do something.
But, a calling is also something much more mundane and natural. It's this intuitive feeling of being drawn to something. Your gut telling you what's the right thing to do. Your heart longing to make a difference in your own unique way.
What a calling is, can perhaps best be understood by comparing it one to one with a career. As illustrated in the picture, there's at seven significant differences.
It’s not always easy to define or formulate what your calling is. It may take time before you find out. Sitting down, thinking a lot and trying to formulate it doesn't work. You can't really force defining it.
Instead, it comes to you when you open your mind and heart and follow your intuitive drive to do one thing and avoid another. This means that, in the end, pursuing your calling is not at all complicated to do. “Just” be open and go where you’re drawn.
As I can tell from my own experience, this is much more rewarding than aspiring for a career. Rather than trying to move up, a calling helps you move forward in a direction where you feel better, by making a difference to others.
