There is no full up-to-date commentary on Herodotus: How and Wells (1912) is still useful, but very antiquated; Macan (1895–1908) is fuller on Books iv–ix. How and Wells drew heavily on Stein (5th edn., 1883–94), but Stein is the stronger on linguistic matters. A commentary in several volumes in Italian by D. Asheri and others is being translated into English: vol. i of this (2007) covers Books 1–4. A Cambridge series of commentaries on individual books is also in progress; so far available are S. Hornblower on Book 5 (2013), A. M. Bowie on Book 8 (2007), and M. Flower and J. Marincola on Book 9 (2002). For Book 2, A. B. Lloyd (1975–88) also is valuable. E. Irwin and E. Greenwood (eds.), Reading Herodotus (2007), is a series of studies working through Book 5 in sequence.
Lexicon
J. E. Powell's, Lexicon to Herodotus (1938) is index as well as lexicon and indispensable for any serious work on Herodotus.
