【Vassar Alum】朱天奇:不断探索不怕试错,脚踏实地寻找热爱
October 10, 2024.Dr. Melissa Mueller, Professor of Classics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, will be delivering a lecture entitled "Sappho's Pronouns in/as Performance."Dr. Mueller's talk returns to Dr. Eva Stehle’s work on Sappho’s personal poetry, with the goal of exploring how pronouns in Sappho interpellate the reader into the textual event of the poem’s performance. In her presentation, Dr. Mueller explores who is the “I” and who is the “you” in performances of Sappho’s lyrics. Stehle has argued that certain poems of Sappho were composed to be read or sung in private. The recipient of the poem was invited to imagine herself (whether as a “she” or a “you”) in relation to the “Sappho” created in her imagination. Such a scenario allows us to bridge the gap between our own way of reading Sappho’s poetry today, which treats the poems as texts, and the song culture of antiquity, where most poems were composed for live performance. Dr. Mueller concludes by comparing Sappho’s use of apostrophe with the second-person addressee in Claudia Rankine’s Citizen. The lecture will take place at 5 PM EST in Thurgood Marshall Hall 0301, at the University of Maryland, College Park. The event is free and open to the public. To join us online, please register in advance at the following link: https://umd.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJMsc-CopjgqH9YLbOtyx1kDGu-ap71zRWEx

the launch of the Gdańsk Decorated Armour Database (www.dad.ug.edu.pl), hosted by the Faculty of History at the University of Gdańsk. The database currently contains the evidence of decorated hoplite shield-bands from the Archaeological Museum of Olympia. Each record is accompanied by photographs and basic archaeological data, as well as original drawings for the best preserved shield-bands. An additional search engine allows users to organise and locate records by type, data, provenance and decoration description.
It is hoped that other types of decorated armour from across the ancient Mediterranean will be added in the future, as well as further educational tools and materials for use by schools and universities. For help with using the database, opportunities for expansion, collaboration or any other questions, please get in touch with the Lead Researcher, Dr Cezary Kucewicz (cezary.kucewicz@ug.edu.pl).
