Fu Wendi, a student chosen to deliver a motivating speech at Sangzhi No. 1 High School in Hunan province during a gathering marking the 100-day countdown to the national college entrance exam last year, became a target of online violence.
Her speech, which gained widespread attention after local media shared it on social platforms, inspired many but also attracted negative comments on Weibo focusing on her appearance and facial expressions.
Despite facing online backlash, Fu's speech, written by herself, aimed to boost her classmates' confidence in their abilities, especially in their economically disadvantaged county.
While some criticized Fu based on a brief video clip, her high school teacher and classmates found her words encouraging and uplifting, dismissing the online negativity as baseless.
Although Fu's family considered speaking out, they ultimately remained silent. Her mother highlighted the helplessness in combating online bullying compared to real-life bullying, emphasizing the crucial role of family support as Fu's pillar of strength.
Dong Chenyu, a professor at Renmin University of China's School of Journalism and Communication, believes that some individuals unfairly judged Fu based on a brief two-minute video, detached from the full reality. Some viewed her merely as a target to vent their own negative feelings.
Dong believed that Fu's resilience against online malice was supported by those around her in real life, underscoring the importance of such support for minors facing similar situations.
Fu, determined to raise awareness about online abuse, emphasized the importance of providing support to those affected, highlighting that enduring online violence should not be a cause for shame. "Individuals facing online attacks require assistance, as coping with such challenges is more complex than handling everyday pressures," said Fu.
