We were in charge of the spatial design and signage for Green Life Shonan, a special nursing home for the elderly located in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Established in 1997, the facility is situated in a lush, green area. For this renovation, we aimed to create a space where users could feel close to nature and spend their time comfortably by actively incorporating natural materials such as wood and tiles, emphasizing their textures and tactile qualities.

Upon entering the facility, the atrium space that opens up in front of you serves as a gathering and relaxing area for residents. The ceiling is designed to let in light from above, creating a refreshing and open atmosphere that feels like being outdoors.

Many medical and care facilities tend to have a cold, sterile appearance with smooth, bleached surfaces in order to maintain cleanliness and meet the required functionality and durability for practical use. In this project, while understanding the importance of these requirements, we transformed the space by introducing materials with texture, creating a warm and comforting environment.

The entrance hall features a composition of unglazed tiles, black-stained shoe cabinets with a brushed wood finish, and deeply carved wooden ceilings, dispelling the chemical impression typically seen in medical facilities. Natural materials with tactile qualities are incorporated throughout, with each texture adding depth to the space. On the front wall, a piece by photographer Akiko Kimura was specially commissioned to complement this environment. The photograph, which meticulously captures a horizon, exudes a sense of tranquility and evokes a primal landscape that resides in everyone's memory. It functions like a view seen through a window, alleviating the sense of confinement that is often associated with such facility settings.

Cabinet installed in the entrance hall is intended for day service users. It features a large sliding door that provides privacy, ensuring visual consideration for general visitors using the same entrance.

The central atrium of the facility serves as a gathering and relaxation space for residents, where day service activities such as recreational programs and meals are held. The soft light cascading from the ceiling is designed to closely mimic natural light, providing residents with a comfortable and pleasant environment. This light is planned to flow down the atrium and extend to the second floor.

The atrium on the second floor is covered with glass for safety reasons. The glass is given a gradient effect, which blurs the edges and creates a soft impression, seamlessly connecting the first and second floors.

The corridors connected to the atrium are characterized by the colors of the wainscoting. The wainscoting, baseboards, and large handrails, which require durability, are carefully rebalanced with standard dimensions to maintain functionality. Elements such as the thickness of the door frames and the expression of room name signs are restructured to achieve a visually appealing, graphical appearance.

We custom-designed the bench to assist day service users with changing their shoes. To minimize the impact of potential falls, we've incorporated rounded forms in both the space and furniture. This bench features a durable, chip-like tile with a rounded texture to enhance its longevity.

Additionally, the handrails installed throughout the space and on the furniture are designed with ease of grasping and holding as a fundamental principle.

The wainscoting features different colors on each floor, serving as an intuitive sign that helps users and staff quickly identify their location. The signage is based on a gold theme, blending seamlessly with the space while conveying a sense of quality. The restroom pictogram's keyword is "nature," and its leaf-overlapping form creates a friendly and approachable feel.

We primarily focused on redesigning the entrance for vehicle drop-off and revising the signage design for the exterior. We planned the placement and size of the signage to ensure that the facility name integrates with the building's overall appearance, guiding visitors naturally from the approach.
