Like the previous edition, this year's show is also inspired by Shan Hai Jing, or The Classic of Mountains and Seas, a major source of Chinese mythology that dates back over 2,000 years.
The 31st Zigong International Dinosaur Lantern Show kicked off on Jan 17. This year's lantern show integrates intangible cultural heritage techniques, spanning from porcelain making, Sichuan opera, colorful painting to paper-cutting. Over 1,700 years ago, when Sun Quan chose Nanjing as the capital of Wu in the Three Kingdoms Period, the aristocrats began to appreciate the festival lanterns. Standing 12 meters tall, the artwork is a centerpiece of the 44th Baotu Spring Lantern Fair. It depicts the iconic character named Xia Yuhe at Daming Lake in a graceful and romantic ancient-style design.
