A recent incident in Yongning County, Yinchuan, has drawn widespread attention and debate. On January 9, a fifth-grade boy, upset after being sternly reprimanded by his father for not completing homework, took an unexpected step. Borrowing a shopkeeper's phone, the 10-year-old called 110 (the Chinese emergency hotline) to report his father for hiding opium shells at home.
Local police immediately responded to the tip. Upon arriving at the family’s residence, officers questioned the boy, who tearfully shared all he knew. A subsequent search led to the discovery of eight opium shells hidden in a cabinet on the balcony. The father admitted to possessing the shells, claiming they were intended for medicinal purposes.
The police transferred the case to the anti-narcotics unit for further investigation, as opium possession is strictly illegal in China. The case remains under review.
The incident has sparked intense online discussion, with netizens divided on the boy’s actions and the family dynamics at play.
Some netizens praised the boy’s moral courage, with one commenting, “This is a true act of justice, even at the expense of his own family. The law applies to everyone, no exceptions.”
Others, however, questioned the appropriateness of the child’s decision, especially given the familial context. “The boy was clearly acting out of anger after being scolded,” one user wrote. “While we should discourage illegal activities, it’s important to teach children the value of communication and conflict resolution within families.”
Another user echoed similar concerns: “Reporting serious crimes is commendable, but the boy’s motivations here seem questionable. Was it justice, or just retaliation?”
