A prominent Chinese education influencer, Zhang Xuefeng, has ignited widespread criticism after revealing his plan to use his vast wealth to secure his daughter's career in the banking industry.

Zhang, who has over 26.5 million followers on social media, made the controversial remarks during a live-streaming session. Known for advising parents on career and educational choices for their children, Zhang boldly stated that if his daughter fails to excel academically, he would ensure her success by depositing his fortune in the bank where she works.

“I run two companies, each with savings of over 100 million yuan (US$14 million). I will deposit my money in whichever bank she works for,” he declared. Zhang added that his daughter, regardless of her educational background, would not need to solicit deposits like other bank employees. “As long as she occasionally dines with me and takes care of her dad, that’s all she needs to do.”

Zhang’s remarks sparked a heated online backlash, with many accusing him of flaunting his privilege and perpetuating inequality. One netizen commented, “It’s brutally honest but makes people deeply uncomfortable.” Another wrote, “If you are that capable, keep it to yourself. Public bragging only invites resentment.”

Despite the criticism, some defended his blunt honesty about the banking industry. “He’s just stating the truth—whoever has large deposits holds the power,” one observer said.

Zhang, whose real name is Zhang Zibiao, gained national fame in 2016 through a viral video analyzing the strengths of China’s top universities. However, his materialistic views have often stirred controversy. In mid-2023, he discouraged a high-scoring student from pursuing journalism, calling it an unpromising field. Later that year, he described arts and humanities majors as a “service industry” centered on “flattery,” sparking outrage among supporters of these disciplines.
