A tragic incident has shocked Sichuan Province after a father fatally stabbed his 13-year-old son, Xiao Yang, over disappointing academic performance. The incident, which occurred in January 2022, highlights the devastating consequences of extreme parental pressure and domestic abuse.
Xiao Yang lived with his father, Yang Ming, following his parents' divorce. Yang Ming, described as a volatile and abusive parent, had placed immense pressure on his son to excel academically. This pressure often manifested in violent outbursts, with Xiao Yang enduring frequent beatings for his perceived failures.
In the months leading up to the tragedy, Yang Ming's behavior had shifted. He became more caring and attentive, even taking Xiao Yang on outings and showing warmth rarely seen before. This period of peace ended abruptly when Xiao Yang's school results were released.
On January 6, 2022, Xiao Yang's father learned that his son had scored only 18 out of 100 in physical education, a subject crucial for the upcoming high school entrance exams. Humiliated during a parent-teacher meeting, Yang Ming lashed out at Xiao Yang, berating him for his low scores and forcing him to exercise intensively. The boy, physically weakened from repeated beatings, struggled to meet his father’s demands.
The situation escalated the following day when Yang Ming accused Xiao Yang of hiding things from him. He retrieved a decorative samurai sword from their living room and, in a fit of rage, began striking his son with the weapon's sheath. The blows were severe, and when Xiao Yang attempted to plead for mercy, his father, consumed by anger, turned the blade on him.
Xiao Yang sustained two fatal stab wounds to his abdomen. Realizing the severity of his actions, Yang Ming called emergency services, but it was too late. Xiao Yang succumbed to his injuries due to massive blood loss before paramedics arrived.
Yang Ming was arrested and later convicted of intentional injury leading to death. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison. During his trial, Yang Ming expressed remorse, claiming, “I had the best intentions but committed the worst act.” However, public opinion has largely condemned his actions, describing them as selfish outbursts rather than genuine attempts at discipline.
