A Chinese influencer, Zhu Miaolin, known online as Ah Miao, has sparked widespread attention by calling on her male friends to wear "Adam’s apple covers," which function similarly to bras, in an effort to promote women’s rights. This provocative call comes at a time when gender inequality in China has been brought into sharp focus, especially after the country’s 2020 National Census revealed a significant gender imbalance, with 34.9 million more men than women.

In her online appeal, Zhu suggested that men wear these covers, which she likened to bras. She explained that, just like women’s breasts, the Adam’s apple is a delicate and sensitive area of the body. Some netizens even noted that both parts can have "sexual appeal" in certain situations. Zhu’s message is not just a playful gesture; it’s meant to highlight the challenges women face in society. She believes that by encouraging men to wear these covers, they could better understand and empathize with women’s struggles regarding body image and societal expectations.

The Adam’s apple covers, which come in a variety of materials such as wool, leather, and lace, are available for purchase on popular Chinese e-commerce platforms. Prices range from 5 to 20 yuan. One particularly popular design, shaped like a pig's nose, has sold over 7,000 units, demonstrating the public’s growing interest in the concept.

Zhu’s call for Adam’s apple covers is part of her broader efforts to promote gender equality through humor and satire. Known for parodying disrespectful male behavior from a female perspective, she has gained significant attention on social media for her videos. In one, she humorously reverses gender roles, portraying a woman as the breadwinner while a man plays the domestic role. In another, she teases a male stranger on the street, sarcastically asking, “You look so handsome, where are you off to seduce other women?”

Her viral videos have earned her over 500,000 followers on Chinese social media platforms, with some posts receiving over a million likes. One male observer commented on her videos, saying that he "completely understood" the sarcasm and felt deeply moved by the depiction of the anger, fear, and helplessness women experience due to harassment from some men.

Zhu's rise to fame has helped popularize gender-reversal narratives, making them a viral trend among female influencers in China. Influencers like Hua Xiaoyu and Zhou Yingjun have also gained large followings by impersonating stereotypical male behaviors, further contributing to the conversation around gender roles and societal expectations.
