A hotpot restaurant employee in Chengdu was caught on video urinating in the kitchen, sparking widespread public concern and prompting swift action from authorities.

The Chengdu Market Supervision and Administration Bureau of Chenghua District confirmed the video's authenticity on January 18. The restaurant in question, the Shuanhuopu Instant Hotpot (Niushikou branch), has since been shut down, and a formal investigation is underway. Authorities have pledged to handle the case in strict accordance with the law.

The incident came to light after a netizen posted a video online showing a male employee standing near a stove in the restaurant's kitchen, appearing to urinate. The man, facing the stove and with his back to the camera, was captured in this alarming act. The footage quickly went viral, triggering public outrage over food safety violations.

Following the viral post, the Chenghua District's market supervision bureau launched an immediate investigation on January 16. Their findings confirmed that the video was filmed at the Shuanhuopu Instant Hotpot located on Shuangfu Road. Upon questioning, the employee admitted to the misconduct.

Shuanhuopu Instant Hotpot is a rapidly expanding hotpot chain under the Chengdu Shuanhuopu Catering Management Company, boasting over 900 franchise outlets nationwide.

The scandal has reignited concerns over food safety and hygiene standards in the restaurant industry. Many netizens expressed their anger and disappointment online, with comments such as:

  • "How can we trust dining out if this is happening behind closed doors?"

  • "The punishment must be severe enough to deter others from such actions."
