A former Bridgeport High School teacher who admitted to having a sexual relationship with one of her students was sentenced for her crimes on Monday but did not receive jail time.
Courtney Rankin pleaded guilty back in October, admitting to having intercourse with her 17-year-old student at her apartment in White Hall when she was 33.
During her sentencing on Monday, letters from 14 character witnesses in support of Rankin were presented, and her doctor, mother and former coworker testified on her behalf. Rankin also gave a statement, saying that she accepted responsibility and was remorseful.
Judge Patrick Wilson sentenced Rankin to 1-5 years of home confinement - if it can be arranged at her home in Pennsylvania - and must pay a $1,000 fine. Rankin will also be required to perform 20 hours of community service per week for the duration of her sentence and will be required to register as a sex offender for life. She will have 10 years of supervised probation after she has been released.
Pre-sentence investigation found that Rankin is not likely to reoffend and is not a danger to society and brought her situation of being a victim of domestic violence and having diagnosed PTSD into account.
However, the victim’s mother gave a tearful prepared statement, asking for the maximum sentence and saying in part, “To you Courtney, how dare you?”
